About
The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden is truly unique attraction that adds new dimension to our understanding of life in ancient China and serves as the perfect setting for a host of multi-cultural events. It features magnificent rockery that resemble mountains that inspired the poetry and paintings of Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist monks and other scholars. Visitors can explore eight pavilions, a bamboo forest path, waterfalls, a Koi-filled pond, Chinese calligraphy, and a variety of Ghongshi scholar's rocks including a 15-foot formation that towers over the central courtyard. The Garden is a compilation of different gardens in China. It is based on Ming Dynasty Gardens (1368-1644). The New York Scholar's garden is the one of two authentic scholar's gardens in the United States. A team of 40 Chinese artists and craftsmen spent a year in China creating the Garden's components and another six months in Staten Island as craftsmen-in-residence at Snug Harbor to complete the construction. The Chinese Scholar's Garden at Snug Harbor is one of only two authentic scholar's gardens in the United States.

We nipped in here for a $5 entrance fee. It is very pretty and we took some lovely photos. Not sure if the history and only a quick wander around but thought it was nice.

Save your time and money!!

If you have seen other people's reviews you maybe fooled, it could be well worth 5 stars decades ago, not now, what I have seen today was a disgrace, paints peeling off the wall, roof tiles in need of work, pond water was dark green, walk ways needs repair, I had a feeling I was in an abandoned building, you have to pay $5.00 to see this. Are you kidding me, so save your time and money not to come here, it's highly not recommended.

Peaceful and tranquil.

Looking to do something in Staten other than hop onto the next ferry back to the city I looked this place up and I was glad that I did. The garden is so tranquil and pretty. Good use is made of the space so you can explore little corridors and courtyards even though it's a relatively small area.I visited just as it opened in the morning so I had the place to myself, the effect may be spoiled with a crowd latter in the day or further into the summer.
Also it's a bit of a walk from the ferry terminal, about 30 mins each way, not through the most tourist friendly part of town but worth it in my opinion.

Spring

Spring in the Chinese garden was glorious. The cherry blossom and magnolia trees were stunning.
Loved looking for all the angles and windows and the little bridge was delightful.
So calm and peaceful.

A unique place to visit. When you step into the NY Chinese. Scholars Garden, it feels like you're in another country. The flowers and trees change with the seasons. There are great opportunities to photograph

We first came here because the NJ Chapter of ASMP was having a photo shoot at this wonderful garden - the Chinese Pavilion is beautiful and well kept and there are live fish swimming in the pond as well as the beautiful cherry blossom trees

I can't tell if it's an authentic Chinese Scholar Garden, since I've never seen a real Chinese Garden. Still, it's very beautiful and relaxing. Definitely worth the trip.

This is another of Staten Island's gems. We were there this past spring for a fundraiser and enjoyed it very much.
