About Shelter Island Kayak
Enjoy a serene paddling adventure exploring the unique natural beauty of Shelter Island’s calm, protected creeks and harbors. Escape from noise, traffic, and crowds—and find yourself surrounded by landscapes untouched by man. Explore the skies for osprey and hawks, watch egrets and turtles remarkably close-up along shore-lines, and observe fish and marine life in the clear waterways. Kayaking allows you to get closer to nature than almost any other form of sport or recreation. Kayaks are a great way to explore the Island in a green, or eco-friendly way. Paddling is extremely quiet, and allows you to enter Shelter Island’s incredible habitats, and leave them completely undisturbed. If you’ve been to Shelter Island before, or you are visiting for the first time, a trip by kayak offers a new perspective of a truly amazing place.

rented a double and followed a map into a small creek, around mashomack, then to taylors island to look at the log cabin. Jay provided water bottles, cereal bars, and a water bag to put our things in. easy kayaking with minimal boat traffic. most importantly, i had a flat tire when we returned to car and he went to his home nearby and brought back compressed air and sealant. above and beyond. it is nice to encounter people who go above and beyond with no expectation or request for payment. Jay is one of those very good and rare people. didn't make it all the way home and had numerous problems and price gouges but Jay helps keep the belief that some people are good.

We go kayaking with Jay as our guide at lest twice a year. This time we requested to explore Crab Creek. It was glorious. Such a serene and beautiful location. We beached the kayaks and jumped into a natural "lazy river run" in the Eddy. Jay had to educate us on what an Eddy means. It is always a fun tow hours with Jay. If you are going to Shelter Island even for just a day plan to spend two hours with Jay. See shelter island via kayak. It is a must do.

We decided to take a last minute trip to Shelter Island to take out 6 and 8 year olds kayaking. We were easily able to rent the same day. The owner gave us his cell number and we texted him when we were on the ferry. He met us right at the water and had everything set up and waiting for us. He was so informative and gave us a map showing us some options on where to go. We totally would rent from him again!

My Wife and I enjoyed a beautiful and energetic tour with Jay today. Phenomenally gorgeous day, excellent scenery and equipment, and Jay’s congenial companionship. Couldn’t have been better.

We spent a perfectly delightful two hours paddling around the bay with the owner, who was charming and informative about everything we asked. Great equipment and company, and of course a beautiful day didn't hurt! FYI Lots of businesses were closed after Labor Day, especially on "tumbleweed Tuesday"!
