About
At miSci, all exhibits, programs, and events are designed with its mission in mind: to inspire people to celebrate and explore science and technology, past, present and future. miSci is home to an extensive Archive and Collection, a Challenger Learning Center, the Suits-Bueche Planetarium, and various special exhibits and programs each year. miSci’s vast Archives house more than 1.6 million prints and negatives from the GE Photograph collection; an archival collection with more than 3,500 cubic feet of historic materials; and more than 15,000 objects relating to the history of science and technology. Featuring dynamic exhibits, state-of-the-art space learning centers, standards-based education for K-12 classes and students, and special programming for teens, miSci offers patrons hands-on exploration while fostering an understanding and appreciation of STEM subjects and careers.

We had tickets for MesMerica for 5:30 on 9/20/24. We arrived inside two minutes late because of the horrible Schenectady traffic and were denied entry by the rude staff. Who has that policy? Don’t care what their excuses are, we drove 45 minutes and had paid for tickets online. We were also told there was not a manager available. Hey Misci planetarium and MesMerica, ever been to the movies or a concert or a sporting event????? Stay away from this kind of rudeness. No excuses.

Fabulous museum - very friendly staff. Free lunch for the kids in the summer too! Museum was so good with excellent hands on activities - we kept a 4,6,8 and 9 year old occupied for two hours, then went to the planetarium to see the space show which was great. Planetarium tickets cost an extra $5. Planetarium show is 45 minutes long so would not recommend it for the under 5's. Free parking too. Wonderful and educational place especially on a rainy day like today!

The MiSci Museum is here to stay. This educational, entertainment center offers exhibits for the young and old. Various times of the year there are "after-hours" events for adults over 21 with beer, wine, and hard cider. The next events are July 19 and November 8. Check out the MiSci today. You and the kids will love it!

I study neuroscience and thought that the brain section of the museum was very interesting and very informative. Also really enjoyed the GE exhibit. Was upset that we did not get to go into the planetarium, but otherwise, was a good visit.

Visited for the first time with my 9 yo. grandson. What a wonderful visit from the moment we entered the main entrance. All hands-on experiences. Where he didn't understand what he was learning, I did and came away with greater knowledge as well. From the exhibit on the brain and how it functions to the one on magnets, MRI machines, etc. it was fabulous. Highly recommended.

During a recent visit to Schenectady we visited the Museum. We had a guided tour by the Marketing Director who was very informed and proud of her product. We walked through a number of exhibits from wind, rain, observatory, but the one that really grabbed my attention was the space program. The program as outlined was wonderful, students worked in teams, got a mission, worked out a plan and experienced what it might be like to work at NASA. I would highly recommend this museum. Not your average museum very hands on experiences.

I took my 4 year old granddaughter to the museum especially to see the planetarium show. I knew it would be crowded as it was vacation week. The place was packed..people parking on and ruining the lawn as the paved lot was full. Very blah cashier took our money, asked which planetarium show we wanted..the web site offered one and had nothing added on the calendar. There were as number of shows. The one we saw was for young children..but very dated..big bird and friendship with China. The woman operating the projector did nothing about the folks taking cell phone pics during the show. Special butterfly exhibit. Teenage docent who disciplined but did not inform. Most of the monarch butterflies dead against the greenhouse glass. Exhibit on gears and nearby computer did not work. Play shopping exhibit sponsored by local grocery chain...all operational but why is it in this science museum? All of this said, there were a number of neat hands on activities that did work. My granddaughter had a fine time. All staffed by young teenagers who did little engagement with the children. I wished there had been a professional staff member with some enthusiasm, a guide either written or posted to the possible activities, and perhaps a visible security presence given the large volume of people.

I can agree that most exhibits in this museum are scientifically sound and very interesting, both the interactive and the historic ones, but for certain these were set up at least a decade ago and have not been maintained since then. This museum is severely dilapidated, in urgent need of good management and investment. Many of the interactive areas were in deplorable state and didn't work. Also, the museum was filthy. All surfaces being touched, were glossy with fat and dirt deposits, the result of all the touching and no cleaning, a great place for children to transfer germs one to another. We went to this museum mainly because it promised a greenhouse with a live butterfly exhibit. How awful! The "greenhouse" was a small room built inside the museum with no natural light for the butterflies and it was not a greenhouse at all, for it contained some pots of plants with a few flowers, some rotten fruit and dead butterflies all over. This tight enclosed space was stuffy with barely any air circulation. The butterflies that were still alive, were flightless, perched on the fluorescent lamp tubes on the ceiling. Even if this had been done properly, one could barely call it a butterfly exhibit as it contained only Monarch butterflies. I felt sorry for the butterflies and was appalled by the way this was set up. There was obviously not one drop of thought put into this and I cannot imagine a scientist, at least one that is competent, being involved in setting up such substandard exhibit.

Visited the Mueum for it's Fine annual Trains and Toys Holidays Exhibit that runs from jusyt after Thanksgivng to Mid January. Excellent Fun! Visited and greatly enjoyed their Planetarium for their Show about Saturn. Dan Hall did a Great Job in narrating!. Their first Shows at the Planetarium on Weekends are specificaly aimed at the Younger Children to enjoy and learn.
Upcoming Events include their Live Butterfly Room/Exhibit in February 2016- I am definitely going to check that out with My Lady!

Impressions of this place differ so much between my elementary schooler and myself.
She can't wait to return every time we come to town, and talks about her experience to anyone who will listen. She enjoys the hands-on water exhibits, and repeatedly returns to the mini grocery store (with a working cash register). The rotating exhibits also routinely grab her attention, there's definitely a good amount for kids to do here.
I see a run-down museum, badly in need of renovation and direction. The exhibits are placed rather oddly, and sometimes feel like they're crammed into any usable space. The odd part is, I've seen many of the rotating exhibits in other museums with much more effective layouts and presentations.
Many permanent exhibits are wonderful historical displays of the greatness that was science and innovation in Schenectady and GE, so I wonder if they are missing their target audience while hidden in this museum. Peeling wall displays, cracked plaster, and dated typewritten labels detract from the valuable artifacts stored here.
Overall, we will keep returning until my child is too old to enjoy it, which I'm guessing will occur at about age 12.

How far are you from Amtrak in Schenectady? Can we walk as we have a 4 hour layover and 6 grandkids to keep busy

The Amtrak station is @ Liberty & Erie just walk up Liberty about three blocks and turn right on Nott Terrace and cross the street go half block and turn right, go up hill on Nott Terrace Heights one block and your @ the museum .
About10-15 minutes from Amtrak station.
