This river ride was the best. Please somebody buy this business and open it up again. The memories and the fun we had cannot be replaced

Fantastic
Aug 2021 • Friends
I had gone here many times when I was I was an adventurous 20 something and always loved it. A less adventurous friend decided she wanted to try and I was excitedly on board. Since so much time had passed I though it a good idea to refresh my memory and read up on it. I was a little alarmed at the amount of negative reviews. After our experience yesterday I’m wondering if I was looking at reviews for the same place. Most of the negative reviews were about rude staff and /or the tubing experience itself being rough or dangerous. First let me say that there are signs everywhere that remind u of this not being an amusement park ride. This is Mother Nature at her most glorious. My experience found the staff at the rental place could not have been nicer or more helpful.
The tubing was a blast! Yes, I was thrown from my tube on more than 1 occasion and yes, I got a little bruised up but I was prepared for this possibility. My friend, who was a first timer had an amazing time as well. These 50 something year old women can’t wait to go back and do it again!

An unforgettable experience on the Esopus
Jul 2020
We went, as a family, to NY in the summer of 1983, camping or with a small trailer, probably. We saw the sign offering tubing down the river and were told it was safe for children. Steve must have been about 10, Christine about 4 years older. We took no camera, or anything precious - except the children of course, each of us with our own rented tube. The water was rougher than we expected, with a strong current. We got separated on the way down and there was no way of reaching out for one another. At one point Steve got caught up in the branches of a low-hanging tree, so he and his tube were stranded there. As we went past, following him, we called to others coming up behind to rescue him, to get his tube moving again, which they did, or he would be sitting there not being able to do anything, and neither would we have been able. Christine was older, so able to manoeuvre her tube around obstacles. We didn't know it was such a long ride, but it took between 2 to 3 hours. It was an exhausting trip down the Esopus. I don't recall how we got back to the car. We bought t-shirts for the children, with 'I tube the Esopus on them' and this is the only photo I could find of the t-shirt on either one of the kids, more than likely taken at the scene.

TOWN TINKER IS CLOSED AND FOR SALE
Aug 2019 • Friends
Sad to see the Town Tinkers is closing. They always ran a class business. Unfortunately all the negative reviews were by people who didn’t read the signs to know what the were getting into. My friends and I have been tubing the the river since I was 8 and always had a great and safe time. Class 1 and 2. One or 2 moments of waist deep class 3 during release. Buy a tube on Amazon and do it!

A must every summer in Phonecia. Nice and long, with some thrills to boot. So sad it'll be closed this year :(

Love this activity, even the quirky bus ride...
Aug 2019
One of summer's best rituals, the trip to the Town Tinker. Do wear shoes that tie or strap securely to your feet - closed toe recommended. There are LARGE rocks and small boulders in the river, and you wouldn't like to bang your toes... Leave sunglasses in your car. Don't bring and expensive phone. Helmets aren't a bad idea if the river is really running. The water is always COLD, and refreshing, and the views of the Catskills from this perspective never cease to amaze me. Go for it and have fun.

Deadly experience Don't go Nearly drowned
Aug 2019
They do not give you any safety guidance. The tube has two little ropes to hold on to. You can lose it very easily.
I thought I could handle some rocky waves. It is much more dangerous than you think. I flipped several times. The second time I flipped I was pulled along by the current and could not get my head above water even with a life vest. I thought I was going to drown. My knees were banging on the rocks repeatedly. If someone didn't finally pull me to the side, I do not know what would have happened. It was the worst experience. You are taking a severe risk when you go tubing. I have bruises on my backside and my knees are all swollen. They will heal but the memory of almost drowning will stay with me for life.

Had fun but can't recommend this
Aug 2019
I went here with my husband. I actually had a decent experience. I don't think I got flipped at all, but I stopped twice to wait for him when we got separated and found it very difficult to get back on the tube. The biggest pain for me in terms of the experience was getting back on the tube, and getting stuck on boulders. At some points it was very, very rocky and treacherous. It was very scary but fun at the same time. I feel that I was fortunate in my experience.

My husband had a terrible time and spent a significant portion walking. He kept flipping and got a small bruise on his leg.

I can't recommend this because I just don't think the risk is worth it. Even a very fit, strong person (which I am not) could be seriously injured. We saw a gentleman who was being helped by other tubers (strangers) who appeared to be injured, bleeding and hyperventilating at the side of the creek. Mother nature is unpredictable, no matter how strong you are and I could see how it could be really easy to get banged up or even break a bone out there.

I didn't like that there is no way to bail if you decide this experience is not for you. You've got no phone, no money, and no transportation, so there is little option but to tough it out. There is no supervision/no one to support you if you get in trouble.

I agree with other reviewers that the staff here isn't very empathetic. Seems like they are making a killing just for renting out some cheap tubes and surprised they haven't been sued. The instructions about getting out of the creek are terrible and there should be an easier path to get out of the water.

I would not do this again and I wouldn't recommend it unless it's a low tide day. I think our day was low tide and I can't imagine how it must be when the water release has been opened. Definitely not for anyone under 16, and for the love of God please get the helmets...I can't fathom how that is not mandatory.

Chill out but leave your rings behind
Aug 2019
I was the baby boomer tubing down the river with a group of millenials. We didn't really know what to expect but the staff made it very clear that this was not a gentle float down the river. They also advised us to remove all jewelry and leave it in our car.

I got tipped out a lot which was both fun and refreshing on a hot day. I didn't notice that my wedding ring had slipped off during one of the dunks until we got back to the car. Wah! So when they advise removing all jewelry, don't forget to take off that wedding ring.

Tubing was Fun - staff was mean and miserable
Jul 2019 • Friends
Tubing was great, it always is! I go frequently with my friends each summer. However, when we went this past Friday, we experienced an incredibly rude and nasty young woman working and giving us our instructions. She was very abrasive and scared one of my friends who had never been before. We realize that going over rules and safety are important, and there is always an element if risk, but after the tubing experience, we all agree that she went above and beyond and talked about this tubing experience like it would be the last thing we ever did on earth.

Anyway - tubing was great. Staff was rude.
