About
Old Westbury Gardens, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the former country estate of John S. Phipps and his wife Margarita Grace Phipps. Opened to the public in 1959 with the mission of preserving a part of Long Island’s heritage, Old Westbury Gardens is an extraordinary example of a gracious era. Built in 1906 by the English designer George A. Crawley, Westbury House is a magnificent country house reflecting English architecture of the late 1600s and early 1700s The house is furnished with fine English antiques and decorative arts and remains virtually intact from the more than 50 years of the family’s residence. The estate includes over 70 acres of landscaped formal and informal gardens. An additional 160 acres of fields and woodlands surround the estate.

30 minute walkthrough of sparsely lit gardens. Horrible. Everyone felt ripped off paying $35 per person.

We bought tickets to the highly anticipated Winter Solstice at the Old Westbury Gardens. It was such a letdown! We have attended light displays at other botanical gardens that were spectacular. This was sparsely decorated and the finale show was not worth the hype.

Went to the gardens on a bus trip. Gardens were very peaceful and beautiful. We had a guide that walked us thought and gave insights we would not otherwise gotten. The house was open but a guided tour was not available. Be aware that the gardens are not handicap accessable and that there are stairs and uneven walkways.

We visited very early spring & there weren't that many flowers in the garden. However it was still a very relaxing & enjoyable experience. The only thing we missed the the cafeteria which was closed for renovations. it is a really beautiful garden with various landscapes.

My friends and I really enjoyed a trip to Old Westbury Gardens. There is a lot to do and see. The gardens are colorful and the grounds are well taking care of.

My husband surprised me on our wedding anniversary and brought me here. I was in awe of all the beauty it had to offer. If you're into nature and it's beauty, this is the place for you! Would definitely AND want to visit again.

During the summer of 2017, I brought and treated my fiancé, Kathy (she’s now my wife) and myself for a visit and tour of the Old Westbury Garden.

We were immediately captivated by the gorgeous mansion, Westbury House, and enthralled by the magnificent formal gardens of Old Westbury Mansion.

When visiting the Westbury House, my wife and I deeply impressed with the mansion’s numerous furnishings and the beautifully decorated rooms such as the “West Porch,” the “White Drawing Room” and the “Red Ballroom.”

In addition to visiting the Westbury House, my wife and I also took part in a guided tour of the estate’s formal gardens. During our tour, we learned about the history of Old Westbury Gardens, and it’s builder and one time owner, John Schaefer Phipps of the Phipps Family, a prominent American family that descended from Henry Phipps Jr, a wealthy and influential businessman and philanthropist.

Not only did the tour guide provide a comprehensive description of the Phipps Family, but she also took the time to showcase and discuss the site’s multiple gardens such as the “ enchanted walled garden” and “ exquisite rose garden.”

All in all, my wife and I highly were highly impressed and awestruck by the beauty and grandeur of the Old Westbury Garden!!! If you are looking to be swept away by majestic landscape, gardens and architecture, then you should definitely visit and take the time to explore this iconic Long Island attraction!!!

This Garden in one of the beauties that Long Island offers
At the center there is a beautiful house, it is pleasure to look at
They also offer concerts which are very special and enjoyable
I think that in every season is wonderful to visit although during the winter could be difficult to be in the cold
I will really recommend the visit, specially if you are in the area

What a wonderful way to get in the Christmas spirit. The mansion was decorated beautifully for Christmas. The tea was delightful. We will do it again next year. Can’t wait for the Gardens to be open in the Spring and Summer.

This place is great. It is the third or fourth area mansion we have visited over the past few years. This place is at the top. We went the weekend before Christmas and were surprised with hot cider and cookies, a mini concert by the Girl Scouts, Santa, and decorations including antique toy trains. The docents are helpful but not pushy. Unfortunately, outside work is being done, so you need to look past the scaffolding. We did not get to walk the grounds (too cold) but are looking forward to returning to do just that.
