About
Old Westbury Gardens, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the former country estate of John S. Phipps and his wife Margarita Grace Phipps. Opened to the public in 1959 with the mission of preserving a part of Long Island’s heritage, Old Westbury Gardens is an extraordinary example of a gracious era. Built in 1906 by the English designer George A. Crawley, Westbury House is a magnificent country house reflecting English architecture of the late 1600s and early 1700s The house is furnished with fine English antiques and decorative arts and remains virtually intact from the more than 50 years of the family’s residence. The estate includes over 70 acres of landscaped formal and informal gardens. An additional 160 acres of fields and woodlands surround the estate.

    Beautiful mansion and gardens
Beautiful place to visit : the mansion has very well maintained historical and cultural artifacts. The gardens are huge and amazing: lots of flowers, flower arrangements, small pools, lakes, trees. Very pleasant to stroll and spend a few hours. There is also place for picnic and a coffee shop. Very warm recommended.

    Excellent venue!
I brought 94 senior citizens to visit Old Westbury Gardens. This is a wonderful venue with great docents who truly loved our seniors' questions and genuinely seemed interested in providing valuable information. Such a great home to view, gardens are beautiful, and I would highly recommend stopping here!

    Enjoyed the Children's program
Excellent children's event today ,"Whimsical Wizard School." Laura led all the children through a magical 2 hours of crafts and nature information while it was down pouring outside The Barn. Program was reasonably priced and everyone had a good time.t Can't wait to see what other programs they come up with for children and adults.

During the summer of 2017, I brought and treated my fiancé, Kathy (she’s now my wife) and myself for a visit and tour of the Old Westbury Garden.

We were immediately captivated by the gorgeous mansion, Westbury House, and enthralled by the magnificent formal gardens of Old Westbury Mansion.

When visiting the Westbury House, my wife and I deeply impressed with the mansion’s numerous furnishings and the beautifully decorated rooms such as the “West Porch,” the “White Drawing Room” and the “Red Ballroom.”

In addition to visiting the Westbury House, my wife and I also took part in a guided tour of the estate’s formal gardens. During our tour, we learned about the history of Old Westbury Gardens, and it’s builder and one time owner, John Schaefer Phipps of the Phipps Family, a prominent American family that descended from Henry Phipps Jr, a wealthy and influential businessman and philanthropist.

Not only did the tour guide provide a comprehensive description of the Phipps Family, but she also took the time to showcase and discuss the site’s multiple gardens such as the “ enchanted walled garden” and “ exquisite rose garden.”

All in all, my wife and I highly were highly impressed and awestruck by the beauty and grandeur of the Old Westbury Garden!!! If you are looking to be swept away by majestic landscape, gardens and architecture, then you should definitely visit and take the time to explore this iconic Long Island attraction!!!

The gardens are exquisite during the summer, with the rose garden fully in bloom! There are multiple gardens, the interior of the house, and a nice forest trail around the pond to explore. I spent about 2.5 hrs wandering around smelling all of the different flowers and marveling at the sculpture. It is a relaxing walk and there are bathrooms, but you will want to bring your own water.

This museum is totally not worth the ticket and the staff there are so irresponsible. They ask me to leave my food at door and promise me I can have my food back when I leave. However!!! They discard my food without notice!!!! I emailed the office but no one ever replied!!!🤬

Stunning! Beautiful! Historic! Stopped here while visiting Long Island & was beautiful! $15 ticket entry allows you access to the property! You can go inside the mansion to see the historic part & stroll around the beautifully maintained property! Lots of photo opps!

We bought tickets to the highly anticipated Winter Solstice at the Old Westbury Gardens. It was such a letdown! We have attended light displays at other botanical gardens that were spectacular. This was sparsely decorated and the finale show was not worth the hype.

The home is beautiful and took us about 30 minutes to do the self-guided tour. The real star is the gardens, which we wandered around in for about 45 minutes. You could spend longer. The dahlias and roses were in bloom as well as a number of other flowers. There are two lakes, a swimming pool, some small cottages, a dog cemetery and numerous paths.

We visited very early spring & there weren't that many flowers in the garden. However it was still a very relaxing & enjoyable experience. The only thing we missed the the cafeteria which was closed for renovations. it is a really beautiful garden with various landscapes.

As former estates of the rich go, this is a modest example. The house and gardens can be taken in quickly (less than 2 hours) or you can take a more leisurely stroll. Quite lovely and very comfortable, moderately formal. Don't expect San Simeon or Winterthur levels of grandeur, but whoever built and lived here had good taste and put it to work in the design of both the gardens and the house.
