Let me start by saying I am not artistic and do not usually go to art galleries. In fact, my daughter was shocked when I told her where we were headed! This art museum, housed in a stately old home, displays the largest collection of Remington's art work and sculptures in the world. His use of paint colour to depict nighttime scenes was breathtaking. The facial expressions in his paintings and sculptures is very realistic; some of the paintings look 3D. This museum is interesting, and no matter your appreciation of art, you will marvel at this man's creativity.

We really appreciate the attention given to us by the employees. The introduction given to us went we arrived was well received as it put all the perspective. The place describes well the life and work of Frederic Remington and his family.

We do not hesitate to recommend this to everyone.

Many original works of the Western artist. Interesting story of his life and how he worked. I would say less than 2 hours for visit.

Our summer place isn't far so we went on a Tuesday afternoon. We were one of three people in the museum so we had plenty of time and space.

Pros: The collection of original Remington paintings, watercolors and sculptures is very good. One can see Remington's progression from the 1880's to the early 1900's and his increasing artistry, which is amazing! There are many excellent examples of paintings, sculptures, watercolors in the collection. Two excellent Tiffany lamps and a Tiffany clock. A very good museum shop with excellent reproductions.

Cons: The explanations and the exhibits are poor, very little context or explanation of Remington's life, or his progression as an artist. This is strange because all of this information is available in the books about Remington available in the books left on the benches and for sale in the museum shop. Perhaps the audio is better but we were not offered that option. The largest par if the museum is the house and collections which have very little to do with Remington. In fact, the house was occupied by Remington's widow and never by Remington. The collections in the house are from donors who collected Victorian objects.
The lighting is very poor. I understand that the museum wants to protect the objects but the lighting definitely needs adjustment.
.
In spite of the cons, I recommend a visit as long as you are prepared for what you will see, or not see. I recommend reading about Remington prior to your visit so you do not have to depend on the labels on the exhibits.

You won't know Remington until you visit this museum. You'll never get closer to his jaw-dropping sculptures and paintings...it's a personal experience. Museum not only honors Remington but also the history of the Parish house/family and their contributions to Ogdensburg's and US history. There was also an exhibit of local artists when we visited. Super, welcoming and knowledgeable staff from reception to the maintenance guy. Extremely enjoyed our visit!

We have been to this area many times, but this was our first visit to this museum and we were very impressed. The young docent that took our admission fee offered to give us some history and we were glad we listened - great overview to start our visit. We were so amazed by how much this man did in such a short lifetime....from paintings to sculptures, we loved it all. We also enjoyed the upstairs to see some of the artifacts from the benefactors of the home that holds the museum along with some of the budding artists from the area. Well done - an enjoyable 1 1/2 hours!

Was tired of paying $1.55 a litre of gas in Canada, when I can get it for 90 cents a litre in Ogdensburg, New York.. I live in Ottawa and it's only 45 minute drive to the USA.. $3.50 to cross the bridge.. I spent 2 or 3 hours at the Muesum.. some great artwork & priceless sculptures by Frederick Remington.. was interesting to see the artwork that he did in Quebec & Newfoundland.. especially that of the Pontiac region of Quebec, where I live along the Ottawa River, many of his paintings & sculptures, museum quality reproductions can be purchased in the gift shop.. Beautiful old Mansion near the Seaway in downtown Ogdensburg.. the history of the house is.. quite something about the mistress who was won over a card game.. next time you are in this part of Northern New York.. take some time & visit the Frederick Remington Museum.. he lived in the region when he was young.. his wife lived in the Mansion after he died.. You won't be disappointed.. well worth the $8 entrance fee.

If you live right in Ogdensburg, New York it is free to go see the great paintings and artifacts in the Museum. There is a small elevator to take you to the second floor if you are unable to climb the stairs. The staff that work there are amazing. They can tell you about every piece in the place. There is also a cute little gift shop just as you come in or are going out. I have been at least 20 times and see new pieces each time I go. I highly recommend any and everyone to visit. It really is amazing.

The museum is a must see for any Frederic Remington admirer. It contains many of his best known paintings and sculptures. It also contains original water colors and sketches, along with personal articles of his.

The museum itself is housed in a beautiful old mansion built in 1810 by a Mr. David Parish. After Remington's death in 1909 his wife Eva was able to live in the house through the generosity of friends.

The house is beautiful and interesting to see itself. There is also a large time line display of Remington's life. Be sure to note that.

If you like Fredrick Remington's art you will enjoy seeing this museum.
