Scary but fun!

My daughter and I walked down the Caldera at 9:00 am and rode the donkeys up. We were nervous but it was fun and nothing bad happened. I read some earlier reviews about there... read more

Don't ride the donkeys. Either walk or take the cable car. This is really cruel. The steps are wide so not very steep which makes it easier. The heat is too much for these donkeys and they are not treated well.

We went to go on a boat trip from the old port and decided to walk down the steps to get to the boat. Was horrified to see loads of donkeys being kept out in the sun being made to walk up and down these gruelling stairs all day carrying overweight and lazy tourists. There was no food, water or... Saw a sign at the bottom of the steps assuring people that the donkeys were well taken care of and had adequate access to water and shade, because of this I decided to take a donkey back down the hill on my return. Never actually completed the journey, upon arriving at the donkey stop at the top of the hill... More

My daughter and I walked down the Caldera at 9:00 am and rode the donkeys up. We were nervous but it was fun and nothing bad happened. I read some earlier reviews about there being cruelty to the donkeys - we did not see anything like that. I think riding down would have been terrifying so if you go, opt... More

I saw with my own eyes how one of the ”guides” punched a donkey in the head with a fist when it went another way than planned. There was no danger there. It was a terrible experience!

We took our kids down the gondola and up the hill on the donkeys. It was a fun and memorable experience and not for the faint of heart. We suggest going on a day when there is no more than one cruise ship in port though!!

Please don't ride the donkeys, they are in the sun all day without any water. After seeing this i choose not to ride them.I would rather view the donkeys in retirement and like to visit them there.

We hope if you visit santorini that you aren't tempted to take the donkey tours. The animals have no shade during the day and I never saw them being given water once in the week we were there. Also the steep path they have to walk are crumbling making it even harder for them. The heat is intense and I... More

Two dangerous experiences with donkeys in gorgeous Santorini to share with you. Firstly in Oia when we were wandering through the narrow streets window shopping and just enjoying the buzz of this beautiful place when, donkey stampede. A dozen deranged donkeys galloped towards us. It's funny and terrifying to jump into a shop doorway to avoid being trampled but the... More

Unless you really want to. But it's a much better experience going up the stairs. I kept thinking I was going to fall and go off the side on the way down. Definitely a must do in Santorini!
