THIS is a general review of Santorini from the point of view of a first time visitor.
We arrived by high speed ferry from Santorini...and so did an army of other tourists.
This for us was the single biggest problem we faced. People simply poured off the ferry like a tidal wave of lemmings and everywhere we went there was the same log jam of fellow visitors.
Narrow streets became choked and at pinch points you had to wait your turn to move forward.
That said, the views on the island and over the caldera are simply stunning and the Church of Panagia was lovely.
We found a taverna off the beaten track to escape the crowds for lunch before winding our way through streets of shops to various viewpoints overlooking the spectacular cliffs.
These are views on a grand scale with a giant cruise ship reduced to a toy boat far below, dwarfed by the cliffs and the hillside of homes and churches.
Be warned. You will pay premium prices at any restaurant able to boast a view of the cliffs and sea, but you can find cheaper places tucked away which offer just as good quality at a far cheaper price.
This is not a trip for wheelchair or disabled people. It is is possible to use a funicular but by and large it is a slog round steep back streets descending off the main drag via lots of steps. This is necessary because most of the best views are gained lower down via these tiny side streets.
The colours on buildings, the different shades of blue in the sea and the brightness under the blazing sun are all lovely. This is why Santorini is so popular but it is also why the island gets choked with people.
It is a trade-off. If you want to go and enjoy the sights and views then you have to accept that other people do too...a lot of other people.
I don't regret making the trip but, now I have experienced Santorini, I'll stick with my memories. I won't be going back.

We visited Oia in Santorini on a day trip on a cruise and was stunned at how beautiful it is. We arrived early before the crowds got huge and managed to get some nice time in the square in front of the Church before it got filled up. By the time we left, it was getting very busy so if you can get up early, it's worth doing.

Located on the main square of Oia, this church with spotless white walls, blue some and a bell tower with six bells is an iconic image of Santorini. The inside of the church is also beautiful. A mass was on when we went in and it was such a peaceful atmosphere inside.

Well worth a stop. OK, it is a pretty sight, it is FREE to go in. Best to go very early as it gets overly crowded as meeting area for tours and families as it is the centre of town and everything sort of heads off in all directions for walking and views.

Beautiful! The main square is a great spot to meet. Close to the famous blue domed churches and shops.

Amazing looking at the architecture from the outside, but the inside is pretty amazing as well. Right in the center of Oia so you can't miss it!

This church is located in the main square of Oia, which means it is also centrally located by the transportation hub and Oia's Main Street. It is the perfect landmark to know where you are and where you go from there. It is also a beautiful church to visit, and worth a photo shot or two from the outside.

The first Orthodox Church we went to was in Oia, Greece. After an hour trip from Fira we walked towards the main square of OIA. A very welcome sight is the beautiful Greek Orthhodox church in the colors of the mediterranean, white walls and a blue dome. My family decided to stay outside and saunter through the square. I, however, decided to see the inside of the church. It was a magnificent church with greek orthodox saints and a beautifully ornate altar. It was mid afternoon and the heat was getting unbearable but inside the church it was cool and the ambiance is holy and spiritual. I said a short prayer of thanksgiving and worship. There was a couple holding hands said their petitions and lit a candle in a small corner of the church. I felt my soul refreshed and I joined my family thereafter.

Lovely church in the square in the middle of Oia. Not only is it good to see it from a historical context, the square itself is a great place for pictures pre and post Oia sunset.
