Old Castle
Oct 2019 • Friends
What an immense castle on top of this rich overlooking the river. Beautiful views of the valley and area, imagine the soldiers who patrolled those ramparts in centuries past. Could use more signs detailing the site.

Excellent castle, superb views
Sep 2017 • Couples
A strenuous climb with many steps but well worth the effort. The views from the ramparts are stunning, up and down the Rhone valley, and over the mediaeval town. The small museum is also well worth visiting.
Helpful hint- look for the 2000 year old sarcophagus and read about the 2 year old child!

Why not ?

If you find yourself in Beaucaire why not visit the Chateau ? Interesting wreck of a place. Not a French highlight as Beaucaire is more off the beaten track.

Be strong willed with a sound heart - the climb is justified

We have many castles and major monuments in the UK but this fabulous Chateau can match any of them. About the area of Windsor castle ( UK ) this site is being magnificently maintained both the fabric and the grounds. A credit to the local staff. So if you visit Beaucaire , please make the effort to leave the beauty of the canal / river side and stroll into the old town and visit the castle. The climb to the castle is steep as are the roads leading up to the ramparts and grounds. The attached museum was closed for lunch when we visited.

We always visit here

This is one of our favorite places in Europe. It's so quaint with so much history. And if you think it's rustic and underdeveloped now you should have seen it 10 yr ago! This is an amazing place to visit and absorb the past.

A beautiful rustic living and breathing town.
Apr 2016 • Couples
A undiscovered rustic earthy town in the south of France. It's unpolished though that adds to it's charm. The town is a maze of buildings with Roman architecture. The people are friendly, though don't expect any English speakers. The town could be improved if dog owners were more responsible, which can be said for many town's in France.
If you are a tourist who likes adventure and confident to move away from the main stream tourism areas then Beaucaire is a place you should visit.

A true Albighensian crusade castle!

This is a beautiful ruin, with a remarkable history, and a great view, in a lovely old quarter with remarkable stone mansions. There's an archaeology museum on the site.

Unlike another reviewer, I like that you have to use your brain a bit to find things in this old quarter maze--it's not that big, and if you can't find the tallest thing in the county...I'm not sure what to say about that. Beaucaire is a little gritty and real, but it sounds like that guy hit it on a spectacularly bad day. There's dog s**t all over France, unfortunately. It doesn't seem particularly bad in Beaucaire. In fact, the town washes the streets every night, so it's better than most places. I've never smelled urine in any of the lanes. Maybe the street washing is a new thing?

If you'd like a more Disney-fied experience, too, the reconstructed Tarascon castle is just across the bridge and I think it's free, too...but I don't think the dog situation is any different ;)

Dirty and smelly town
Aug 2015 • Family
We stopped in Beaucaire on the way back to the airport. We parked and walked down the side of the Sete canal towards the town and the castle. There was dog mess everywhere which literally meant not being able to look up at the buildings in the town in case you landed in some.
We tried to locate the castle but only found a route to the museum, so we went back into the town and walked through the narrow streets towards the castle again. The narrow streets smelled of urine and were again full of dog mess.
The buildings were of lovely honey coloured stone and it was obvious that this could be a quaint old town, but not for us it was badly signposted for tourists, smelled horrid and needed a really good clean up!
We never got to the castle proper as we couldn't wait to leave - sorry!
