Excellent views of butterflies and chameleons in a nice setting
Great place to see many species of butterflies as well as in a separate cage chameleons. The latter are caught because they eat butterflies! The garden is very pleasant and the staff of the centre provide a good explanation, also not too long.

    A beautiful experience
The butterfly centre was a beautiful experience. After arrival, the guide offered a detail explanation about the life of butterflies and how the centre works. After that, we entered the garden, which is a piece of forest with a nice fountain covered with a net, so the butterflies can wonder around without escaping. We had the chance to see the cocoons and it was wonderful to just be there and enjoy how they fly around and even, if you stay still and silent, they come and lay on you. You can remain in the garden as long as you want. And the best part of it is that the admission fees directly support the community, training butterfly farmers and improving the region.

Lovely stop before you go home
Lovely centre with beautiful butterflies and even better four chameleons who charitably let you hold them! It’s very small so you don’t need much time here - 30 mins max. You will be taken round by a very cheerful and friendly guide. Recommend doing what we did and combining with a tour at Jozani Spice Farm and a tour of the Jozani Forest national park. We organised this ourselves for a much cheaper price (just by arriving at the place and asking for a tour) than the operators will charge you! It was great to come here on the way back to the airport before an evening flight.

    Well worth a visit
What a lovely place to learn about butterflies, chameleon conservation and Bush Baby conservation. We had a lovely guide walk thru all that is done here. Well worth a side trip if you are in the area. There are a couple friendly tortoises to visit too.

We visited the Zanzibar butterfly centre, which located very closely to Jozani national park in January 2018. It is a local centre, built with local associations.
This very interesting visit began in the centre, where a geode explains everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the life of butterflies. After, we went into a garden to see various species of colourful and beautiful butterflies
It was a very interesting visit, and also to recommend to families with children!!!

Very interesting project and worth spending an hour or so on the way to or from Jozani forest. The idea is to give the local community an economic stake in the preservation of the forest and thus move them away from environmentally damaging practices like charcoal production towards more sustainable ones like butterfly farming.
The center houses a few dozen species of butterflies. You get a small intro into their lifecycle and then you get to spend as much time as you like in the garden where they are kep. Entrance fee was 12,000 shillings in Jan 2020.

The centre has a nostalgic feel especially when you think of butterflies and the beauty they add in nature..we were looking forward to a step back in nature and experiencing this in their natural environment..the host was knowledgeable especially in explaining the life cycle and showing us around but unfortunately the centre has a neglected look. The place is abit run down and even the butterfly sighting wasn't as expected which was disappointing as the uniqueness of it would have made the experience worth the entrance fee paid. The place has potential and most people would identify with the magical feeling of being in nature surrounded by the beautiful butterflies.

Very nice place to go. Small scale community project and with the entrance fee you will support butterfly “farmers” in the region. Nice explanation by the owner on the breeding process of butterflys. Nice butterfly garden

While I am not a big butterfly enthusiast, the Butterfly Centre blew my mind away. My bestfriend and I had an exceptional time watching the beautiful butterflies and learning about their entirety. The guides were gracious enough to teach us about the life cycles and metamorphosis. Butterfly Centre is near the huge Jozani Forest where you can take a stroll enjoying the amazing. If you want a reliable driver and guide to organize your visit to Butterfly Centre you can WhatsApp Babli through (+255756983368).

We arrived there in our way to Paje and the eastern part of the island. It is located near Josani forest, so you can visit them both easily. The friendly guide will describe you anything you need to know about the butterflies.

It isn't a large place, but hosts very nice and lots of butterflies.

Being an avid butterfly enthusiast, I could not leave Zanzibar without visiting the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre. I enjoyed learning about everything to do with butterflies from the friendly tour guide. Though it is not as vast, the memories at the Buttery center still lingers in my mind. I thank Babli (+255756983368), my tour guide throughout my time in Zanzibar, for recommending this place. For those who like the natural environment you can also visit the neatly Jozani Forest.

We spent a lovely hour or so at the butterfly centre. We were welcomed and given a short talk followed by a look around the boxes of newly hatched butterflies. I appreciated how our guide didn’t rush us and let us enjoy the butterflies by ourselves but was there if we had any questions. He then took us to see the chameleons that they had taken from the butterfly enclosure and kept in an outdoor section. My children loved trying to find them and handling them. Recommend this place just to spend time being surrounded by butterflies but overall experience was great.

This was one of our favourite trips during our stay in Zanzibar. It's quite a small community run project but well worth a visit. Probably allow an hour and a half.
So well run and informative we saw some beautiful butterflies and amazing chameleons.
The best part is it is not busy atall.
