The fortress has its own history, but it has been allowed to deteriorate into mere fragments of a wall. The fortress has been taken over by cell phone masts. There is really no fortress anymore.

The ruin is not worth seeing and the area is full of waste. The view is nice, but otherwise there is nothing to see.

The old fort, which has also been a prison, is in a bad state of repair, and there have been plans to knock it down to build a casino complex, though there's no sign of work going on now. There's a fence around it, and a gate which says 'no entry', but we went in anyway, and the men who were working on the telecommunications mast saw us and didn't seem to mind. It's possible to get into almost all of the rooms or cells, and to get all the way around the fort. It's a shame it's falling down because in my opinion it's one of the best attractions on the whole island. There are wonderful views of Mindelo, the harbour, and the channel, from the top of the hill, so it's worth going on a sunny day. To reach the fort, walk from the centre of town along the waterfront road until you reach the roundabout by the beach. Turn right up the hill, and take the road to the right signed for Alto Fortim.

During an island tour we saw this but could not go in. The guide said the old fort has been purchased by someone with a view to converting to a hotel/casino.
It’s a shame that one of the few old buildings is no longer accessible.

A pity. This fort used to defend Mindelo harbour. Nowadays, it has been bought by particulars to build an hotel and casino. In January 2016 access was cut off by a metalic fence and very little activity could be seen inside.

This may have been worth visiting in the past, but it is now only visible from a distance. It is now a ruin, and you cannot get close to it. It is no longer worth making the effort to see it, except perhaps in passing.
