This statue has a troubled history. It has been moved and even turned around depending on the prevailing mood of the locals. The reason for this is that it reminds people of their colonial past. Attitudes now seem to have moderated, and once again the statue is on the sea shore facing out to sea.

An Portuguese explorer who worked with Henry the Navigator, he explored the Cape Verde islands. The statue stands right by the Torre de Belem on the waterfront.

nice view of harbor and right next to Torre de Belem, near fish and municipal markets, etc. Standard statue of famous person - not worth a separate visit unless you are a bronze afficianado

You can't fail to see the statue as you wall along the sea front. Wish there was more information .... Several locals were seated at the base of the statue when we visited, so we didn't linger to find out more.

Between the Avenida da Republica and the sea is the big bronze statue of Diogo Afonso, the Portuguese navigator, who is considered to be the discoverer of the islands of Sao Vicente and Santo Antâo in 1462 and who later became a captain (governor) of Cape Verde. The statue is next to the Torre de Belem and was erected during Salazar's regime in Portugal.

Dressed in a wide and long robe, with a big sword, looking out towards the sea, the statue is very similar - and probably a work of the same sculptor - to the one dedicated to Diogo Gomes on the Plateau in Praia, the navigator, who two years earlier (1460) had discovered the island of Santiago.

A modern statue next to Torre de Belem. The nice thing about the statue is its location on fishermen's beach where there are many colourful boats and in front of 19th C English-built trading houses. It is very photogenic in its surroundings.

This bronze statue commemorates the discoverer of the Cape Verde islands. It's situated on the seafront very close to the Torre do Belem looking out to sea. Worth a look and a photo opportunity.
