A museum of the sea; with many old pictures of how the port looked , when it was an important coaling station for shipping. The history of the visiting whaling ships needing local people to work upon them.
Don't miss the fine views of the harbour and town, from the top of the building.

Replica of the famous tower in Lisbon right next to the fish market. Inside there is a maritime museum with some finds that were recovered from ships that sank off the islands. English descriptions only on the first two floors. There is a beautiful view from the roof. Entrance fee 3€ or 300 escudos.

An interesting building containing displays and information about Cape Verde's/ mindelos links with whaling. Info is written in French, english and German so is very tourist friendly. 100esc entry per person. Nice views of the non-working beach and the port from the roof top. Cheap entry so worth a visit if you are in the area but it wont take much of your time.

This tower is not a marvel by itself but it is located in the most interesting area of Mindelo so it is worth getting to it . The Fish Market , the colonial buildings, the stores ..... everything is nearby !

Prominent building on the waterfront you can't miss Torre de Belem. For a small island I thought this museum was very interesting. Focussing on whaling I found it informative and well presented. There's a small entrance fee and from the top floor there are lovely views of the town.

Located close to the sea and the fish market and with the same name as Torre Belem in Lisabon. Great view over the city, and with a lot of interesting history of the place/island, fish and octupus in glasses with formalin, and also teeth from whales.

Next to the lively and very worthwhile to visit Fish Market is the small replica of Lisbon's Torre de Belem, housing since 2014 the interesting 'Museo do Mar'. There are no opening hours mentioned and the entry fee is only 1 € (100 Esc). The museum is on 3 floors and with an observatory rooftop, and has no elevator.
Many different aspects of the sea in connection with Cape Verde are presented here. I liked the not too long, but informative boards in Portuguese, French and English in relation to each subject.
One theme is Porto Grande, the big protected harbour of Mindelo with all its not too long, but important history, a lot related to the times of the British Empire. Underwater Archeology is also represented with finds from shipwrecks around the Cape Verde islands. 'Music and the Sea' is a theme in the city of Cesaria Evora with her song 'Mar Azul'.
Many Capeverdian seamen were once working on whaling ships from New England and later went to live there. This connection is well documented, especially with New Bedford. The whale itself and and the marine biodiversity in general are also paid attention here.
At the end of the visit it makes sense to go up to the rooftop to overlook one of the most beautiful harbours in the world.

I wasn't expecting that much, but this sight still managed to disappoint. While looking for the tower we had read about, we at first couldn't find it. When we did find it, we realized we had walked past a few times, not realizing it was THE tower.

In the centre of Mindelo, near the fish market and beach where you can watch the catch bring gutted (eels arrive in wheelbarrows!), lies the tower. A clean and well presented copy of Lisbon's gem. This is Cape Verde, Africa so there is a twist. It is smaller than the original but in keeping with the size of its setting. Local Museo do Mar is housed within but opening times are varied, so do check. The area was buzzing with local traders, ladies walking with bowls of anything on their heads, men waiting for work, car mechanics, bicycles and more fish. This is a commercial port, not a tourist trap and all the better for it. Beware the wind whipping up sand from the beach and throwing it in your eyes. Maybe that is why there is an optician on the waterfront!
