We’v been to Santa Maria beach to see the shipwreck on Friday 24th of January 2020. Paid 128 euro for tour by TUI. The way we were driven to the spot was far from safe and healthy, though we took over some private tour cars which seemed to drive slowly and much safely. When we arrived there, the guide told us the story about the ship in a way suggesting he was tired of us and place. His ignorance of the historical facts was appalling and attitude he presented towards us was much beneath standards of culture and disrespectful. Does the TUI monitor its workers and the way they behave? If it does, it means it is not done by professionals. I consider the tour as a waist of money and I do not recommend TUI’s amateur guide.

We walked from Sal Rei about one and a half hour and most of the time in an incredible landscape of dunes. Take sufficient water with you - at least 2 liters. There is no shadow. Good shoes are necessary, too. The ground is first stony and later sandy. The dunes are much more beautiful than the beach which has a lot of dirt and plastic. Nobody was on the way or beach, only traces of cars on the beach.

The road to this side is rough, it takes quite a while to arrive at the shipwreck. In our opinion the shipwreck itself was very underwhelming, it lays quite far into a rough sea, so you’ll have to look at it from quite a distance. Considering the time it took to get there definitely not worth the time.

Did a half day excursion with our tour operator to this shipwreck and a few little villages. Our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable. Interesting to see the shipwreck. Couldn't swim as the sea was very rough. Beautiful beaches. Unfortunately, we as a world create so much rubbish and it turns up on beaches like this which makes you think about the damage we are doing to the environment especially during turtle breeding season

The beach is fairly nice however it is covered in litter, quite a lot of litter.
The shipwreck is kind of a 'once in a lifetime' thing for most people but most of it is now gone and the rest will be gone in a matter of years.
The best bit for me was getting fairly close to the crabs that were roaming the beach.

I visited this beach as part of the Jewels of the north excursion that Thomson run as I was desperate to go and see the Shipwreck. I was not disappointed, there is very little left of the shipwreck now but it is still worth going to see, the prediction is that the wreck will be completely disintegrated within the next 5/10yrs so definitely add this one to your list if you're on the island! The beach is beautifully white and sandy and is a gret location for photographs. The tour guide prepared us before we walked onto the beach for plastic problem they have there - the current/tide washes up all kinds of rubbish and junk and the island hasn't yet found a way to solve the problem but it did not spoil the day at all. The journey was quite bumpy as the beach can only be accessed off road so be prepared, we found it to be an amazing experience, bumps and all!

What an amazing deserted beach, but not for long as a hotel group have plans to build several hotels along it. So visit now while you can.

How far is this from Sal Rei, is it a taxi ride or are there any buses on the island between beaches?
Written February 5, 2016
No buses, we were on a pre paid tour with Tui. I dot think you could get a taxi out there as it’s over a great expanse of sand dunes, more likely to hire a dune buggy from hotel
