About
Genesee Country Village & Museum is the largest living history museum in New York state. Located in Mumford, New York, about 20 miles (32 km) from Rochester, New York, USA. First opened to the public in 1976, the authentic 19th-century Historic Village features costumed historians breathing life into many of the 68 relocated and restored historic homes, farms, shops and other public buildings. When you visit during the regular season (Mother's Day weekend through October 12, 2020) you will find various historic trades and craftspeople as well as historic cooking and agricultural demonstrations. GCV&M is also home to the John L. Wehle Art Gallery, our Nature Center, Silver Baseball Park, a pioneer farm, and several Heirloom Gardens. Numerous special events and classes are also offered throughout the year. In the off-season, join us for special events and classes. See our website for details and tickets.

The parade and the swearing in ceremony of new American citizens from 28 countries were highlights of a true 4th of July celebration complete with a picnic

While camping in the area our family spent several hours here on a Saturday. It’s a very nice and well kept living history village.

We came here for a birthday celebration that was hosted in their meeting rooms, and then were free to explore the grounds.
I didn’t know quite what to expect, but it was nice seeing period-dressed docents occupying many of the buildings, some engaged in activities appropriate for their surroundings (e.g. cooking or smithing), and others just ready to provide historical context.
Unfortunately, we only had about 90 minutes to look around before closing and this was absolutely not enough time.
Be sure to download the “Genesee Country Village & Museum” app before your visit and charge up your phone. Also, stop by the confectionary and pick up some goodies.
There was a wedding happening on the grounds as we were leaving, and this seemed like a romantic place to have it.
Would definitely try to make more time and visit again.

My wife and I spent most of the day Sunday 10/10 visiting this place and enjoyed it very much. From about 10:30 am to closing at 4 pm.
Picture of a map with list of buildings is attached.
Of the 49 restored/ relocated buildings here we visited all but about 6-7 that were closed.
Representative pictures of the site are attached.
Many had a person in period costume giving information about the building or activity associated with it.
All the people here were very friendly and provided interesting information or demonstrations ( i. e. Blacksmith, tinsmith, weaving, farm animals, making apple cider, etc).
We also listened to an informative presentation about the Genesee Valley canal, no longer a canal but now a greenway by Janice-Mary who was also the docent in the Hamilton house #47. She did a very good job at both. Picture of her during the canal talk is attached.

We wanted to visit the Genesee Country Village & Museum when in the area; however, we were not able to. A flyer advertising the village and their website listed days of operation and hours, and we drove there planning to spend part of the day. When we arrived shortly after 10:00, advertised opening time, there were four or five cars in the parking lot but everything was locked up and dark. No one seemed was around.
It was like a ghost town. There wasn't even a sign on any of the doors indicating that they were closed.

I spent countless hours here with my children when I lived in Rochester. Went back today and it is still the interesting, rambling, pastoral, beautiful place that I remember. I love it here so very much.

The cooper I found was The most interesting craft and he took the time to explain who he made the butter-churn and the buckets. We really enjoyed it when they called the Oxen and they came up to plow the field. The entire experience was very educational. .

WOW! A short distance from Buffalo (shorter from Rochester) and a gem of a place to visit. Had no idea that the "village" was so big and ended up only seeing half of it! We will certainly be back! If you like history then this place is a must! For example, one of the houses was lived in by George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak, when he was a young boy. The docents are all so nice and they are insightful and interesting. Still amazed that for $18 a person ($16 if you are a AAA member!) you have admission to a wonderful collection of buildings that are all "native" to NY! This place is huge! Had such a wonderful time and really wish we arrived earlier in the day so we could have experienced the entire "village". Highly recommend!

History of early New York classically laid out with docents to explain what you are seeing. A great area to get a sense of what life was like 100 years ago or more.

How long do people spend on average per visit?
DeannaB68
Wyoming, NY55 contributions
We recommend you plan to spend the whole day, or even two days to see the entire campus, though some folks come for as short a time as a couple hours and may only visit select houses, or visit just the gallery or nature center, not even making it into the historic village itself. You should be able to see a good number of places if you plan for a minimum of 4 hours, but you will not be able to see the entire historic village in that time so best to use the website and decide ahead what you want to see the most.
We are open from 10am to 4pm, though on a few special event Saturdays we are open until 5pm. There are 68 historic homes and businesses to explore. On weekdays you will usually find 20-22 costumed interpreters to converse with. On weekends or special events there can be upwards of 32 costumed folks to talk with.

I am not sure what link you mean, but if you need a lift while visiting GCV&M and the trolley is not running, you need only ask a staff person and they will call someone to assist you.

Hours of operation are as follows: note that the museum is closed on Mondays, and also on Tuesdays after September 10.
GCVM is open 10 am-4 pm
Tues-Sun, May 7-Sept 4
plus Wed-Sun, Sept 10-Oct 9
& May 30, July 4, Sept 5 & Oct 10
In mid-September, the village is still fully staffed with costumed interpreters.
The trolley runs on weekends during the May-October season from 12 pm - 4 pm. On special event days, the trolley runs from 10 am - 4 pm. Available for use by all guests.
After October 10 the regular season ends, and there are special events, like October ghost walks, and December "Yule Tide in the Country," where select buildings are open to demonstrate changes in Christmas traditions that developed throughout the 19th century, and costumed interpreters lead visitors through a prepared script. Timing your tour for twilight hours, when buildings are illuminated by candlelight, adds a special flavor to the experience!
Check their website for more info about the 3 restaurants on site, events and programming, and planning your visit.
Coming from Pennsylvania, if you're looking for a place to stay, you might consider the Genesee Country Inn Bed & Breakfast in Mumford, NY, which is located just down the road from the museum. There are also a number of great hotels or B&Bs in the greater Rochester area.
I hope you have a wonderful visit!
Are walk ways gravel or paved? We have wheelchair
DeannaB68
Wyoming, NY55 contributions
The roadways are gravel. There are a couple sections with a brick walk and a plank walkway section, but for the most part you would travel on the gravel roadways. About 20% of the buildings in the historic village are handicapped accessible, as well as the John L Wehle Gallery which houses the Susan Greene Historic Clothing Collection, the current exhibit "Gone Fishin'" and the "Forty and Fabulous" exhibit of recent acquisitions. The Depot Restaurant and the Pavilion Garden Restaurant are also accessible.
