With the uncertainty of COVID Summer Part II, the family opted to take a shorter-than-usual trip to New York. Either my wife or I worked out that the Farmer Boy Farm was in New York, so we made the ridiculously long drive with our four kids (aged 9 and younger!) up to a few miles from the Canada border.

Was here as the office opened. Took a little while for the tour to get put together, but was well worth the wait. Kids enjoyed seeing all the places in the book that they'd read about. Tour guide was very interesting and informative. Inside the house, I enjoyed that they found the ink blots on the wall when they redid where Alonzo ruined the wall and his sister covered for him.

I'd never read any of the Laura Ingels Wilder books until I read them to my kids this past year, but it was worth the drive to almost Canada to visit this spot, even if the rest of our trip was hours and hours away. Kids loved it.

I've read all of the Little House books so many times, and to see Almanzo's boyhood home was like a dream come true. My guide was excellent and although the amount of original artifacts is limited, everything is accurate to the time period. Turn the blade on the fanning wheel, fill the water trough for the livestock, see where Mr. Corse stayed when he taught school. Trout River is just across the street down a short path where the sheep were washed and ice was cut. Everything is so serene and beautiful, and it brings Farmer Boy to life!
There is also a reproduction schoolhouse there, a gift shop and small museum, and nice bathrooms. Guided tours must be scheduled and cost a small fee, but it was so worth it! You can wander the grounds for free, but if you loved Farmer Boy you're definitely gonna want to see where Star and Bright's stalls were and how big Mother's loom was 😊

Yesterday we went to the Wilder Homestead and had a awesome time! The tour guides were friendly, informative, and helpful (thanks Camden & Amy!). They were great with our four kids (ages 12 and under) and allowed the kids to share from the book and ask questions. The farm buildings were fun to explore and we loved going in the house and schoolroom. The store made me want to buy all of the extra books and the prices were reasonable. Nice job! Thanks for being open!

This tour exceeded our expectations - and we were pretty hyped about it! :) We are big little house fans and our tour guide was excellent at involving the kids and making the books come alive! We also learned a lot about the history in the time period of farmer boy. Our tour guide was amazing and answered all of our questions and was so kind and informative. We had an awesome time on this tour, even if it was raining and we didn't get to walk to Trout River!

It was easy to find using our GPS though signage isn't the greatest. We didn't tour the inside of the home, but walked around the house, barn, and orchard. Nice little museum. I was amazed at the copies of LIW books in so many languages. Probably time to reread Farmer Boy.

While the homestead is smaller than you might think, there is plenty to do. Once you arrive, you go to the visitor center to pay for a tour. There is also a museum in that building with many details to look at while you wait for the next house tour. The tour begins with the barns, the grounds, the house, and a replica schoolhouse. Our tour guide, Maeve, was friendly and personable. She answered all the questions our group asked. After the tour, we walked down to the river, which was a reasonable distance away, across the road and down a path. We were able to eat our picnic lunch in the covered pavilion. We probably spent 2-3 hours there, but I imagine we could have spent more time. From their calendar, it looks like they have a lot of nice events throughout the summer. When we drove back through the town of Malone, we noted that the fairgrounds were probably the same as mentioned in the book. Overall, a worthwhile side trip for fans of the Farmer Boy book.

We loved the tour of this hidden gem... our tour guide was knowledgable and engaging! I grew up in the area and always knew about this place but never visited. It is an example of how we sometimes miss the great stuff in our own back yards. I took the tour with my senior mother who was able to keep up with the pace of the tour and was permitted to sit in the various rooms. There is a steep staircase to manage to visit the second floor which she could do slowly... in a couple years I'm thinking she wouldn't be able to. If you are in the area or just passing through, you must make this a stop. It is a window into the past and brings a classic story to life.

Almanzo Wilder is my favorite character from the Little House books so I had been looking forward to visiting his childhood home from the Farmer Boy book. We arrived right at 10:00 when they opened and stayed until almost 2:00! It was so fun to tour the property, look through the home and barns, and to look through the gift shop and school. My kids LOVE the pump and tried their best to fill the trough. We also went down the hill to the Trout River. Our tour guide Jim was fabulous! It was a great day!

The homestead was just beautiful, and so very well-kept. I expected to see the Wilder family when we walked through the door of their old home! So much history packed into the entire farm! It was an awesome experience. So many details everywhere that are right from the book. I even got to hug a tree that would have been in front of the house when Almanzo lived there. If you drive just down the road you will come to a bridge that crosses Trout River mentioned several times in the book. You don't even have to walk across the fields to see it, but I wish I had had more time to do just that!
