This is a nostalgic, quant train ride that was enjoyable. These wonderful attractions will be a of the past if we don't support all the efforts that many volunteers put into these types of attractions. The only thing they can do to improve on the tour is to give a more historic oration of the area while in route.

We were anticipating more scenery. We saw woods, beaver dams. These are things that are native to our local home area and that we see routinely. The volunteer staff are friendly, entertaining and fun. The ride is disappointing at best, and you are not able to see the town of Lake Placid.

Rode to Saranac Lake on the 10:30 train and it was a beautiful peaceful ride, rode in the open car and it was cool and breezy. Takes about 50 minutes and that's just right to take in great blue herons, beavers and ducks and a nice doe. Had lunch and a little shopping in Saranac and back on the 1:00... More

We took the rail from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake and back. On the way there, we rode in the open car, which gave us a great opportunity to take pictures over the beautiful landscapes. The ride was narrated by one of the railroad workers and he was funny and informative. We opted for the 1 1/2 hour layover in... More

The train staff were wonderful. I recommend the open section of the train... you need the fresh air as the aging train has a bit of a smell. The entire train could use a good cleaning in my opinion. The price was steep for the experience. Start your journey in Placid rather than Saranac. This is a very family-friendly activity.

Loved the whole idea of a trip on a vintage train ride. Our train was from the 1950's and you could imagine all the travelers heading to the slopes! Museum was interesting and the conductors and staff were informative and super friendly. You can feel their passion for the old locomotives and all volunteer their time. Scenic is a bit... More

Have taken this trip , along with the boat ride on the lakes , about 4 times , just love it and would love to go during fall folliage.... There is a lot of trees after all but also beautiful scenery along the way. Plus we got to have lunch in Old Forge....

The train ride itself is nice, but there is not much to see from the train. We were expecting mountain views, but mainly all you see are trees along the tracks. We felt like we wasted time we could have spent driving around to sight-see. In addition when we got to Saranac Lake we had a hard time finding an... More

I couldn't find a page on Trip Advisor that covers this particular train journey, so I'm putting in here, even though we didn't go to Lake Placid. Hopefully people interested in train travel might find it, or Trip Advisor might start a section dealing specifically with this journey. After travelling from Seattle to New York on Amtrak, we decided to... More

Not much to see on train. Nothing at the destination on the other end-Saranac. Driving around the area is much better.
