St.George is the most spectacular of the rock hewn churches in Lalibela. While other parts of the world have amazing architectural wonders carved into the rock, St. George was constructed by carving from the ground down into the rock (building from the top down). The quality of your photos will depend on the time of day that you visit. I suggest late afternoon for the best photos from the top. It is an interesting walk through pathways carved into the rock to go to the bottom and into the church.

Lalibela is a must see for Ethiopian visitors even though the town is somewhat dusty. The airport is approx. 25-30 minutes away due to the mountain roads, but worth the drive. The history and unbelievable craftsmanship of this churches is a must see.

Its been a while since my last visit to Lalibela and the rock-hewn churches. But I still remember the feeling of peace and tranquility I felt that day. It never disappoints. The beauty in tradition, the architecture, and the peace that dominates the area are intoxicating. Definatly recommend a visit.

This place is absolutely stunning! 11 churches from the 12th century and still in use. They are not museums or ruins but alive with priests and pilgrims, chant and incense.

Although the church entry fee is now $50 per person, it’s something that should not be missed. Just because it’s Ethiopia doesn’t meant we shouldn’t have to pay for the upkeep of these important sites. (You would pay the same at many European sites) However, there are virtually no services available for the tourists. All of this can be overlooked just when you consider the profound part of history you get to witness when visiting all the rock churches. Insist that your guide find you a ceremony to attend in one of the churches. Each church offers ceremonies on different days. Be prepared for walking.

Beyond belief...and decidedly not just for believers, St. Giyorges is a magnificent mystery to behold. If you are interested in the exquisite rock-hewn churches of Lalibela (and you should be), you will definitely need a local guide. You can't do better than Addisalem Berhanu (ask for him by name...the locals will know where to find him). Warm and friendly while remaining extremely professional and organized, Addisalem will ensure that you get the very best experience.

a wonder of the world. Petra (Jordan) has wonderful buildings carved out of rock, these are even more dramatic - at least as good and worth seeing as the guide books say

The church is rightly famous and better in person than the many photos. There are good vantage points from park-like areas above the church. Plan to spend some time here ruminating on how this is even possible!
