Love to hike!! This is a great hike. Only thing that I wish is that there were more sights to see on the way up!! Beware that the bugs get bad as the weather heats up. There is a good view and lunch spot at the fire tower ( remember the bug warning- they do not care where you are!!).... More

First off a caveat...rating a hike is very relative. I've done hikes with my family in the Northern Adirondacks and White Mountains (Cascade, Whiteface, Mt. Washington) that I would call difficult and/or physically challenging. With that background I'd rate Black Mountain "moderately" difficult. It isn't long (2.5 mile hike in) nor is it a high elevation. But the last .8... More

I am most certain this is the first overlook up on Prospect Mountain since I have taken the same exact photo recently. Further up the mountain their are 2 more overlooks and at the last you can take a shuttle up to the peak which I had done a while back and prefer the last overlook. I take photos and... More

Been wanting to check out this hike for a while and am glad we did. We went up the shorter way and down the longer part of the loop. The reason I don't give a "5" rating is that the shorter trail is heavily used, badly eroded and rocky. If things weren't so dry, it would by muddy, too. Also,... More

Took the trail to Black Mountain top back and forth, which took me around 2 hours (fairly high pace). Moderate difficulty I'd say, nice colors along the path as foliage transitioning to fall tints. Wear adequate footwear as some rocky passages, especially after heavy rainfalls, it can be a little slippery. View of lake George and surrounding forests from the... More

I did the full loop. From the Pike road trailhead I took the counter clockwise route. One hour and twenty minutes to the top, one hour and a few odd minutes eating lunch at the top, and about two hours and fifteen minutes down. The trail up is easy to moderate. The last half is very rocky and straight uphill.... More

An easy to moderate trail( at the end there's some slight rock climbing to the top). best view of Lake George if you make it up there.. Pack water and food.. theres nothing around to stop and buy anything. The Ranger tower is open no more, which is a shame.. that was great to climb and see the entire Lake... More

Would have liked to hike a little more. But the views are spectacular. No real maps of the area that would have helped us to hike.

summer along the lake is great. and hiking black mountain on a summer day was so worth the experience. it is a tough hike, the beginning is easy, but the higher you go, the more rocks you have to climb on to reach the summit. we only went to the summit, we were a bit pressed for time, but it... This is a more difficult hike as compared to Buck Mountain and it is worth the extra effort This is the highest peak along Lake George and it provides fabulous views both north and south on the lake. I came in from the lake side - allow about 5 hours round trip from the lake side - get a dock... More
