Choose a dry day!
Oct 2021
We thought we were going to make it back in time to avoid the "showers" that turned out to be substantially more precipitation than predicted. Rocks are of course "slippery when wet" (both uphill and downhill), and the trail turned to mud and puddles. Went off on a foliage hike, but the second part up to the summit is rocky and rooty and you have to watch your steps instead of being able to look at the foliage. Not the mountain's fault, but we got quite a drenching on the way back!

Sunset!
Sep 2020
Beautiful hike and really was magical.
I was concerned about the bitch bark trees that were dead all along the trail. The path was clearly marked. Lots of mushrooms on the trail. It was workout going up. I want to do this one again. 2 bridges, a stream, and go before dark, the mountain gets pitch black. The sunset was well worth seeing it. Mountain faces out west.

Good Hike
Sep 2018 • Family
We've done this hike many times over the years and it is always a great choice. It isn't too long or too strenuous. We prefer to go from the east side, but both sides end up at the top. The top area is mostly rock and offers great views of the lake and other mountains nearby.

Moderate Hike, Great views
Sep 2018 • Friends
We started from the Black Mountain trailhead near Route 6. We did an out and back, not the loop, and we went counter-clockwise. Trail is very well marked and easy to follow. Not too difficult but if you are a new hiker and past your 40's you will get a workout. Took about 5 hours round trip with plenty of breaks and time at the top to enjoy the great view looking north on Lake George. Top has an abandoned fire tower, and some generators so the nature feel is somewhat limited unless you look out over the lake and ignore the man-made stuff.

Easy to get to, price was good and the paths were well kept. Any age and any health types can see something.

Great walk in the wood

Be prepared. Lots of rocks on the trail and steep in parts. Bring water and snacks. Start out early in the day and pace yourself. A cell phone, flashlight and small first aid kit are essential.

Great exercise!!

Love to hike!! This is a great hike. Only thing that I wish is that there were more sights to see on the way up!! Beware that the bugs get bad as the weather heats up. There is a good view and lunch spot at the fire tower ( remember the bug warning- they do not care where you are!!). Take the long way down ( not really- only an extra mile) that takes you by the lakes. A glorious hike if the temperature is cool. A grueling hike if the temperature is hot!!

Relatively "Easy" Climb...Nice Summit View
Oct 2015 • Couples
First off a caveat...rating a hike is very relative. I've done hikes with my family in the Northern Adirondacks and White Mountains (Cascade, Whiteface, Mt. Washington) that I would call difficult and/or physically challenging. With that background I'd rate Black Mountain "moderately" difficult. It isn't long (2.5 mile hike in) nor is it a high elevation. But the last .8 of a mile hike is "strenuous" (you've heart rate will go up)...though very doable. My wife and I made it to the summit in <2 hours (and we took a couple of breaks). The summit is a bit disappointing in that the observation tower is fenced off (taking away most of the peak's vantage point) but there is a wonderful outcropping on the north side of the tower with an unobstructed view north. We were there in late October on a clear day and the views were spectacular (tho it was quite windy). We took the same "red trail" back and got back to our van in about 90 minutes (doing a nice but safe pace). All told we did the hike round trip, including about 30 minutes at the summit, in under 4 hours. A perfect "day trip "hike". Note, there is a parking lot off of Pike Brook Rd at the Red Trail trailhead. It is about 1 mile off of Rt. 6 (my GPS struggled with finding the location).

beginning of beauty

I am most certain this is the first overlook up on Prospect Mountain since I have taken the same exact photo recently. Further up the mountain their are 2 more overlooks and at the last you can take a shuttle up to the peak which I had done a while back and prefer the last overlook. I take photos and did not find it to be photogenic at the top due to the trees and the visibility was not too clear.

Awesome Views, Especially in Fall
Oct 2015 • Friends
Been wanting to check out this hike for a while and am glad we did. We went up the shorter way and down the longer part of the loop. The reason I don't give a "5" rating is that the shorter trail is heavily used, badly eroded and rocky. If things weren't so dry, it would by muddy, too. Also, a delinquent with a can of blue spray paint has been up there this year and defaced several rock surfaces. And the last mile seems much longer than the sign says!

But once on top and beyond, the views are among the best anywhere. The rest of the loop down and past the ponds is a better and more interesting trail. If I do it again, I probably will take that trail both ways and turn around short of the summit. Plenty of things to see before then. All in all, a great hike!
