Spent the day here. The staff person at the gate was not very personable and the staff person in the Awosting parking lot failed to provide (driving) directions to the appropriate parking lot. We came with the goal of visiting the lake minnewaska beach and were directed by the attendant to a winding mile or so long ascending path that was challenging as we carried our lunch/drinks and our beach chairs along with us on a hot summer day. Had some nice views as we went up the trail. After arriving to the part of the trail by the beach, we noticed construction happening beside the parking lot for the beach. Obviously, it would have been appropriate for the attendant to direct us to this lot, particularly as we noticed that the lot was not full when we approached it. As we visited during coronavirus times, we would have expected the Awosting parking lot to be better controlled re: spacing and for the beach to be better controlled for spacing. Cars in the lot where we parked were about 3 to 4 feet apart (the attendant was directing cars where to park) and not all groups at the beach area were seated less than 6 feet apart. Engaged one of the lifeguard staff at the beach soon after getting situated and he was quite pleasant and welcoming.
Beautiful views of the lake and cliffs from the beach but as the day wore on poor management of egress/ingress at the two ladders in the deeper portion of the swimming area was notable (kids jumping into the water from the dock and then scrambling back up the ladder with no regard for people entering the water and no parents or staff managing them). Water was relatively clear and not too cold/warm.
I would say this beach is definitely worth a visit, but you should be aware of the issues I mentioned above.

We came on a Tuesday after not being able to get into the park on a Saturday (parking lot full, I believe people come before 7:00 am).We parked at the Awosting Falls parking lot. A short walk through the woods takes you to the top of the falls, then a downhill walk on a carriage road will take you to the bottom. Amazing views. Then back up on the same trail and uphill on the carriage road, following the orange trail. After a relatively steep climb (but not challenging if you are in moderate shape) you finally get to the Minnewaska Lake. This is wonderful, with places to sit, have a picnic, trails around the lake for even more views. There is a much bigger parking lot here at the lake, but if you then want to see the falls, your way back would be uphill. Of course, one could drive from one parking lot to the other, thus avoiding the walk uphill through the woods. But that is part of the wonder of nature. I am so happy we went.

Very nice place with many hiking trails. I was surprised by how many signs I saw with " ice crampons recommended". I found out soon enough the trails were all ice. It would have been a cake walk except for the ice. We did push on to see the falls but it was very tricky. As has been the case in this year it was crowded on the weekend. so if this is when you can go, go early. The parking lots fill up quickly limiting where you will hike. We did the Awosting falls trail and it was short so very easy (on a good day).

We went to this park on a Friday, it was not crowded. The road up to the top parking lot is under construction but that is the best place to park if you want to walk around the lake. We walked the carriage road around the lake, it was about 2 miles. The views are gorgeous. There are picnic tables to eat at but you must bring your trash out with you. We saw a park worker picking up trash, there are people who think it is ok to leave their dog poop bags in the woods. It was overall very clean. Bathrooms were open but they are not flush toilets. We had a hard time navigating the maps and wish the signs were better so we decided to drive to the lower lot to see the falls. Again not great signage but we followed people across a small bridge that was under construction to the falls. They were pretty but due to a dry summer not that impressive. They accept the NYS Empire Pass here, we will return !

Came here for a weekend of rock climbing at the Peterskill area at the Shawagunk mountains! The climbing areas are really accessible from the parking lot. The facilities are simple but clean. There can be a line to get inside in the morning, but it's very spacious and there was plenty of space for everyone to climb, boulder, and hike!

Went there in Apr 2020. Due to coronavirus they only allowed half occupancy and blocked off every other parking spot. At around 12ish all the spots were taken and you would have to wait for someone to leave in order to get a spot.
We did the trail around lake minnewaska and it’s an easy trail with some beautiful spots.

This is the perfect place for a nice day trip in the upstate NY area that is reasonably close to NYC. The hikes around the lake are very easy and some are even disability/wheelchair friendly. The whole lake route will take 1-2 hours if you take your time and there are also lots of other longer hikes and routes for more experienced hikers and trekkers. The pictures are amazing and the trails are nicely labeled. The maps in the Visitor area can be a little confusing but just trust the path.

The best season to visit Minnewaska State Park Preserve is definitely in Autumn. The mountain is in warm colors with lake views and it was astonishingly beautiful and magnificent.

The trails are wide, flat and great for beginners and elders. The direction and signs are also easy to follow. The lake is transparently clean and natural.

The only complaint is the maintenance of the facilities, which should be held responsible by all the visitors, especially the restroom. It is really dirty and sticky without any cleaning.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve is a large state park. There are various trails and areas of the park. We enjoyed our walk to Awosting Falls and then hiked from that area up the orange carriage trail to the Lake. The views were beautiful and the trails were in very good condition. It was a great way to spend part of a day.

My favorite place in the world and so glad it's in my back yard. But I will say, as much as we locals enjoy sharing this beauty with people, we do not appreciate people who do not follow the park rules, who litter and drop cigarette butts, who let their dogs run loose, who do not wear helmets while biking, ride bikes too fast with no concern for others, leave the trail to crush delicate flora, swim where they aren't supposed to, and those who do not know how to crap in the woods (please - animals are drawn to waste and can ingest this stuff and die!) Please take time to learn about how to treat this environmentally sensitive area. Then enjoy sensibly.
