Great tour!

Just outside of Ndola, this is a great experience to learn about history right here. The tour guide was terrific, very well informed, passionate and articulated the information wonderfully. I lived here for 3.5 years without experiencing it and now that I have I’d definitely recommend it!

Excellent Museum and Memorial

I went here as part of my research into what happened to Dag Hammarskjold's flight in September 1961. If you are interested in the story, before going here, read the new book by Dr. Susan Williams. Also, to do justice to Ndola—a hard place to visit—give yourself lots of time. My articles on the subject are posted on CounterPunch. At this point no one knows exactly what happened to the flight, but I rule out pilot error.

I visited this Memorial a while ago but found it quite informative. As a boy this bit of history stood out. The assassination of the secretary general of the United Nations was a huge thing. I found it a solemn place which seems appropriate for the level of history that lies in this place. The guide was very informative and though the displays were a little faded we were fascinated. In the west we would have digital displays and gizmos but no such things here. With recent reports about the pilot of the plane that shot down Hammarskjoeld coming to light this memorial should have renewed interest. If there is anyone further interested there was a book by Susan Williams called Who Killed Hammarskjold that is excellent. Well worth a visit.

A look back in history

I went to the memorial because as an ex-UN employee the events of September 1961 have always fascinated me. The site is simple and unpretentious - which befits the nature of the tragedy and of Hammarskjold himself. The normalcy and quiet of the site add to the sense of tragedy as you imagine this site covered in the wreckage of the DC-6 that was carrying the UN Secretary-General. As is often the case with these kind of sites in Africa there is so much more that could be done to enrich the experience but clearly resources are not available. The gentleman who is the guide at the memorial was very informative. I am glad I went as the site and the event itself draw together so many historical strands from that particular period of Africa's decolonisation.

A short drive from Ndola, via the dual carriageway, the little spot has a lot to tell of its history.

Easy to get to if you're driving from Ndola to Kitwe and well signposted. It's the actual crash site and the museum has some interesting information. The guide was useful too.
