From Syracuse area, came to see Chicago for my birthday. It was a super spectacular special performance. Every character was perfectly cast. The music was spot on and the director had a super power ability to pull this off expertly. Even got the audience involved occasionally. Four thumbs up for a great performance.

The Hangar Theatre name comes from an earlier use of the property as the hangar for Ithaca's first airport. You'll find historic photos in the lobby and you'll be delighted at the excellent reuse of the facility. I'm guessing that the facility seats 150 to 200, all very comfortably around a thrust-out stage and everyone is reasonably close to the action on stage.
This is truly professional theater in every respect. The seats, stage equipment, lighting, restroom, ticket booth, lobby, and food service is all top drawer and reasonably new within the past five to ten years.
As for the Center for the Arts at Ithaca production of Lin-Manuel Miranda's "In the Heights, it's top rate professional theater. Each summer for 42 years, the theater company has presented four or five plays. I haven't seen the others, but this was excellent theater with a cast of pros across the board.
I suspect that several other groups use the Hangar during the rest of the year and it's a good bet that you'll find every performance rises to the level demanded by such a good play house.

We liked the location, the size of the venue and its warmth and romantic feel. The performances are entertaining, wholesome and they do a wonderful job of educating young people in the arts.

Too many productions include unneeded vulgarity and lewdness.
The quality of the productions is otherwise good

Love the shows at the Hangar. We were season subscribers for many years until one year (fall 2012) we resubscribed for the new season (Summer 2013), and they ended up cutting the number of plays in the spring from 5 to 4 with no refunds or notice to their loyal subscribers who already paid before the new season's plays were announced. Other than that poor management, the plays are great--we now pick and choose the plays we want to go to vs. subscribing annually--who knows when they will again pull a similar event. Apparently there were others upset as we were able to buy tickets the day of the play this year.

Thank you for your positive review about the Hangar Theatre! We're glad that you've enjoyed our shows and have been a long time supporter of the arts. While we did make announcements about the switch from five to four plays at the end of the previous season, it was missed by many, and for that we apologize. Going back to a five show season is very important to the Hangar and is part of our newly established 5-year plan. I can assure you that there will be another great four play season next summer and that our early subscription prices have not gone up from last year. We would love to have you back as part of our subscriber family and encourage you to contact our Audience Services Manager to discuss this and to get a better sense of why the Hangar had to make the switch from five to four shows. Hope to see you at the theatre!

Enjoyed "Around the World in 80 Days" recently at Hangar. Wonderful production.
Here is why we almost didn't see it.
Drove up to buy tickets at 4:50pm for 7 pm show.
The only sign I could see from my car was Ticket Office Closed.
What would you do if you were me? It was raining... would you get out of your car and look around? I almost left.
What the sign didn't say, BUT COULD HAVE, was "opens at 5 pm". That way anyone would have known when to come back, or, in my case, stick around for 10 minutes. Which I did. And saw a wonderful show!
I mentioned this to the ticket seller once I got it. I received one of those "are you from Mars?" looks.
If their goal is to sell tickets they should learn how to think like a customer.

The Hangar Theatre is a great regional theatre. Broadway stars at upstate prices. A great way to spend an evening in Ithaca.

Although we enjoyed our first outing to the Hangar Theatre we did not have a totally wonderful experience. The seating is very tight. Not only tight from side to side but it is cramping for the legs also. I thought it was just me because of my "large" stature but my wife, who is 5'5 and average build was also quite cramped. We were also uncomfortably warm during the performance. We did sit in the top row but noticed other folks fanning themselves. I personally feel that if we are to pay the going price for theatre seats we should be comfortable. Again, we enjoyed the performance...not the amenities.
