Saturday's attempt at enjoying Michaela Anne and The Wood Brothers was my first and likely last experience at the Ithaca Theater. Short and to the point, its effort to be a social club and theatre simply doesn't work...the establishment caters well to neither when combined.

While I enjoy drinking and good music as much as the next, there is little room for movement, drink sales lines compete for bathroom lines along stair wells, and face-to-face communication can only occur standing in clogged thoroughfares.

For those who attend to enjoy the performance, good luck with that. There is constant clamorous socializing occurring, even during a primary, otherwise spectacular event. The audience is never settled, endlessly getting up in the way of your view to grab another drink or to go the bathroom, requiring between them and the isle to exit the very narrow seating row to let them out, then in, then out, etc.

Think I'm kidding? Reach out and ask Michaela Anne (opening performer), who initially threw the audience a clear "hint" that performing amidst the clamor was not easy. For her finale, she explicitly asked that listeners attend to the important message within her song (ironically, about respect for others), though to no avail. Dismissive or oblivious to either plea or the 'shushing' of those who wished to listen, the socialites refused to yield.

But that's not all! I'm going to attempt two reviews, because travelers deserve a complete picture of the scene and experience.

This iconic landmark has been in Ithaca forever, and I saw movies here as a child. Not having been back since those days, I returned to see the Tom's Elton Tribute Band.
The venue is flat out gorgeous, and still has the unique features of old time theater. The vistas from the balcony are gorgeous...and we had seats in the front row-wonderful!
Unfortunately, our friends had seats in the second row near people who were obviously very drunk. They were loud and laughing inappropriately with a cackling voice throughout the entire show. The people left at least twice during the performance to get more drinks, which meant that the servers were literally choosing to serve obviously drunk patrons. Our friend did speak to workers at the venue on the way out, but the show was over at that point. My friends also had to move from their seats each time the girls left. They wish they had just relocated-since there was plenty of seats available.
Tom was good-he's young so his voice took a bit getting used to , being long time Elton John fans. The music and piano playing was epic!!

Was here first time for a concert. Theater is old and a little dated. Seats small. Restrooms small and were not all functioning at the time. Otherwise, a good experience though. Nice to see these old style theatres still in use.

Have been to this theater before and this trip did not disappoint. It is an old movie theater that has been renovated to its former beauty. It has good acoustics. I would see any band I like there.

Our seats were front row upper balcony. We thought we had chosen good seats when the venue went on sale the first day but were mistaken. The sound was terrible.. all muffled. The front row had amazing views but the constant walking throughout the whole concert of people in front of us wrecked the whole experience. Gone are the days of common courtesy. My recommendation would be to only sit in the first balcony where no one is walking in front as you have the overhang. Also parking downtown is a nightmare due to one way streets.

Excellent, excellent, excellent show, theater, beverages, renovated bathrooms, etc... and the theater is still being renovated. Again Dan Small Productions is bring in top name talent and we have attended several shows there and will continue to do so! I have praised the Theater in past reviews and I continue to rank them as a excellent theater and one should experience a venue there. Excellent shows, beautiful old theater and one always experience a great time while attending. Great comedians, bands, artists etc...

Having top acts come to Ithaca and no traveling involved is a beautiful thing. The theater is historic, is being restored slowly, bathrooms, etc...which someday will be completely restored. The prices per show are quite reasonable compared to other establishments and Dan Smalls, the talent coordinator has done a outstanding job bring shows here. Now they have even started movie showings. My only negative comment is that they should have better lighting in the balcony for a individual to find his seat otherwise I have no negative comment, just a constructive one. One should visit here to form their own individual opinion. Mine is a excellent one! I have attended many shows, over 25, and have only seen one poor one. I believe there not to be a bad seat in the house! One should attend and support!

We love the State. There are no bad seats but it can get rather warm in there so dress in layers. Also the bathroom situation can be intense... not many choices. Love the State.

The two downsides first - not a large entrance area means a bit of a line getting in, and, as mentioned, they don't have barcode readers so make sure you print out your paper tickets.

We were there for John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett perfroming acoustically, and I was amazed by the sound. No crowd noise (or if there was it was well directed), and crystal clear guitars on the balcony. Whether that was the result of the sound engineer or the venue itself, irrelevant. It was probably a combination of the two, but it was defintely one of the best sounding shows I've been to.

The venue is nice, the seats are comfortable, and on the balcony they are very steep. We were in the front row on the aisle, but I'd find it hard to imagine that there are many blocked views if you have people in front of you.

Fantastic historic venue that does live concerts very well. Great sound, seats even in the mid level, had great sight lines. Good choice of snacks and coffee. Prices weren't too bad except for bottled water.
