Visited Buttermilk falls in early October. The Ithaca area has been under drought conditions this past summer and there was very little water running. This actually was a plus in that you had a much clearer view of the various rock formations.......a great couple of...More

Usually Buttermilk is one of my favorite falls to visit- a must see in Ithaca and easy to pair with a trip to Treman Park. Unfortunately the summer drought has dried up the falls and yesterday they were not impressive as they usually are. Typically...More

Even though there was a drought and the waterfalls were but a trickle, hiking the gorge was just amazing. Steps helped with getting to the top. Another must see!

Did the small hike from the upper gorge to lower gorge and return via the rim trail. It was nothing exciting. There has been a drought and the waterfall was not that impressive. I would not go out of the way to come here but...More

This was my favorite of all the state parks we visited. It was a beautiful hike with many gorges and trails. We started at the top (we were staying at firelight) and hiked down...gorgeous. And not nearly as crowded as near by parks.

We pulled into this park in a 26 foot RV not knowing the road conditions. After talking with the girl in the office ,we thought it would be fairly easy going up. However the road to the camping area was riddled with potholes and the...More

With Taughnuck Falls and Treman State Park so close by I would recommend them over Buttermilk. The falls are a short walk from the parking area and are pretty but overall not as impressive as the other ones I mentioned. If you can't long distances...More

After visited Watkins Glen's Falls just two days earlier made this visit seem less impressive. Buttermilk Fall is experiencing a drought as well, hence, the would be amazing natural pool wasn't open due to very little water and no water fall. The hike is at...More

Watkins Glen was on our list but was closed at the time for trail renovation so can't say. Buttermilk was beautiful but I've been told the water flow is much less later in the summer.

I wouldn't recommend hiking the Buttermilk Trail for a 5 year old. The steps that run along the falls at the lower Buttermilk are steep, and there is no railing. There are other parks close by where a 5 year old can hike... More

If they are reasonably fit you can park at the lower level and hike to the upper, then go around the lake and back. With stops and not pushing it it'll be a good two hours. Bathrooms and water are at the mid point.
