Nice downtown area...we came on a Friday night. Although there were several vacant or closed spaces there were enough shops and restaurants open where there was life. Interesting downtown.

This downtown area is fun and lively. This is like the main streets of yesteryear with people, shops, and restaurants all within a short walk. It even has a playground for kids (not open right now during COVID). You park in the parking garage right next to the main street. If you are visiting and don't have a nice main street in your town, I highly recommend you visit this area.

Ithaca is dreary, dirty, run-down, and uncomfortable. The house next to our airbnb was literally falling apart and seemingly abandoned, or used as a crack den, but a woman was actually living there. We stayed a few blocks from the commons and as soon as we turned the corner onto Green Street I wished for a concealed carry permit. There were shady characters, garbage on the streets and the pungent stench of urine. We passed a rehab facility, halfway house, homeless shelter and welfare office. There were unwell people walking aimlessly which was scary. The Commons was such a disappointment. I expected a bustling and quirky location with great food and shopping, but instead most stores were closed, out of business and restaurants looked sort of not open anymore or unprepared for business. We walked up the gorge, stopped for water at CTB and then started the downhill walk back to the commons. The houses and streets were disgusting. Dirty outdoor porch sofas and overflowing trash bins, and broken down homes made me feel depressed. We thought about eating dinner at one of the restaurants on the commons but couldn't decide because there was just something "off." We walked back to our airbnb and ordered pizza. Not good pizza. I actually slept with my purse beside me just in case we had a break in during the night. We had breakfast and coffee at CTB and then high-tailed it back home. Although we paid for a two-night stay, we didnt want to spend another night in Ithaca. Not charming. Dont go.

Had some time to kill on a Tuesday afternoon, so took a ride over to the downtown. After driving in circles trying to find a parking spot that wouldn't drain our wallets, and then seeing all the homeless hanging our on corners and lying in the street, decided there were better ways to spend an hour. This doesn't speak well of the local government. College students may not care about what it looks like, but we're not going to spend money in a town that doesn't "sweep" it's streets.

I have to say that we visited the downtown but felt uncomfortable! There were a LOT of people and a LOT of them were not wearing there masks! Not good with a pandemic going on!
