About
Lively Run Goat Dairy is one of the longest operating commercial goat dairies in the country, beginning production in New York State in 1982 and pioneering goat cheese in the American marketplace. The entire Messmer family works to continue the mission of bringing to the Finger Lakes region healthy, sustainable and delicious goat cheese. Come visit the farm, get a tour, see our baby goats in the spring, eat some cheese cake, and most importantly - try our cheese!

Worth the Stop
Jul 2020
Stopped here for some delicious cheese and cute goats. No tours but you were allowed to go in the barn and see the goats. They have a few tables in the shade so we were able to have a picnic lunch.

Yummy cheese
Jun 2020 • Family
We stopped by the farm shop to pick up some cheese right after they were given the approval to open up their shop after the Covid 19 shutdown. The woman who waited on us was as sweet as could be and although tastings are not currently permitted, she explained the different cheeses to us. We purchased two different kinds and they are both fabulous. We love searching out local dairies and farms when we travel and Lively Run did not disappoint. Definitely worth a stop.

amazing goat cheese!

We stopped by for a tasting, very isolated, had that Deliverance kind feel without the banjos... We did the $5 tasting which was fun, then they let you walk around the goat barn unattended. So cute, but some of them are pretty aggressive!!! The goat cheeses were the best in the finger lakes hands down. Wish they would sell more at Wegmans!

We visited the dairy and sampled both goat and cow cheeses that were all excellent. We also visited the goats in the barn and they were adorable.

Great cheese
Sep 2019 • Couples
We did a tasting of their cheese. It was tasty. They sell a bourbon maple syrup that will become a staple in our home.
I wish there had been someone to tell us about the goats and process.

Cute Goats - Nice Family Activity
Jul 2019
While taking a week's worth of camping in Ithaca, the family and I visited Lively Run Dairy for the Goat Feeding and Cuddling Tour. At $12 a person, it was not too bad considering this is probably the only time in our lives that we would feed and cuddle adorable baby goats. The experience lasted around and hour, and that was just the right amount of time. There is also a cheese tasting included with the Goat Feeding tour after you've played with the goats.

First we were led into the barn and given a short talk about the goats and what to expect. We each got a bottle with a nipple and then the goats were let out into the open area of the barn where we were waiting for them. The feeding was cute and kind of funny, but they were hungry and were finished in under 10 minutes.

We and the babay goats were then let out of the barn into a lawn adjacent to the barn and we were given some additional instructions on what the goat like to do while outside. One of my boys loved it, but the older one (10 yrs) was a stinker that day and lagged behind (too cool for school). My younger son (7) loved it and probably would have stayed all day.

The goats pranced, and jumped and climbed and were right alongside of us the whole time. We were all encouraged to pick up the goats, play with them and run with them. It was very cute (have i said that enough??).

After the tour we returned to the barn and saw the goats back into their fenced in area, and then went to the storefront and were given a 10 cheese sampling tray. The cheese was very good, but we did not take any with us due to our camper status at the time.

The only thing that gives this review a 4 star rating is that we were greeted, but not given all too much info about where to wait, what to do, etc., while we waited for our tour time.

However, this experience if worth the price and short drive from Ithaca proper.

Great cheeses and petting baby goats! What's more fun that THAT?

OK, don't blink or you will miss this place. It is WELL off the beaten path. (Hint, hint... you need better off road and at-your-location signage.) But we were determined to find this place. It is a working farm, nothing fancy, and simple, homey, yet friendly place it is. As we pulled up, the two young greeters scurried from the front porch into their tasting room and began to get our tasting tray ready. Emma and Kelsey were sweet and knowledgeable about each goat and cow cheese we were sampling. Several cheeses were take-home worthy.

After our purchase, knowing I was dying to meet the other inhabitants of the farm, my husband asked, "Can we see the goats." YES! And there were several newborns from that week eager to meet us, too. We got to cuddle with the 5 day old baby goats and ask questions. What a fun time!

If you have kids, this is a must do! Or be a kid again, and get there yourself. Worth the drive!
