About
Kafue National Park covers an extensive 22,400 km2 area in central Zambia. The park was proclaimed in 1950, making it Zambia’s oldest national park and one of the world’s most important natural heritage sites. As an essential water source for the region, Kafue is also one of the last vast expanses of the iconic Zambezian ecoregion – and home to elephant, large predators, the highest diversity of antelope species in Africa, and over 500 bird species.

The park and its environment is absolutely beautiful, but the wildlife is very poor. We hardly saw anything. Our favorite part is by far the Itehzi Tehzi lake, the Hippo Bay campingsite and the Konkamoya Lodge. The wildlife in that area is wonderful.

We spent 3 days in the park. Its the second biggest Wildlife park in Africa which means there is a lot of space for many animals. Unfortunately there are very few animals and sightings are rare. The Tse Tse flies are a serious issue as well. Doing open vehicle game drives with small kids is not a good idea. I understand the role the Tse Tse plays, but it is not really made clear by the lodges how bad they are. River activities are great as no flies are there, however very limited wildlife sightings from a boat can be expected.

What are your plans when visiting a wildlife park? The answer to that question will 9 out of 10 be watching and enjoying wildlife. And there is the problem, there is hardly any wildlife in Kafue. All the things we read online prior to out visit; we have seen nothing of it. We crossed the park for 4 days and camped at different sites. Maybe also good to mention: tsetse flies all over the place and the will not stop irritating you. Safe yourself a lot of frustration and dissapointment and don't go there.

Kafue Park is not for everyone, as it is huge and game widely dispersed, i.e. it takes long drives inbetween sightings. First-timers to Zambian parks better go to Luangwa or Lower Zambezi first, where densities are better and viewing easier. But, as Kafue has a wider species' variety than any other park, it is the best place to visit after having seen other areas.
One interesting area is way up north, the Busanga Plain and Swamp (only upmarket camps here), where lechwe, lions and leopards abound, and where birding is best. The forested middle park-section is easiest of access (only 3 hrs from Lusaka; there are also flights), with cheetahs and elephants, often wild-dogs, and the seldom-seen spring-hare and lesser bush-baby (only during night-drives), while the southern park is rather poor for game-viewing (too many tsetse), though also good for birding. There is a new 'spinal road', linking central to southern park areas, offering easy access to lodges on the Itezhi-tezhi road. Worth a visit is the David Shephard Foundation's elephant-orphanage rewilding facility near Ngoma (the main orphanage is in Lusaka, Lilayi Lodge) which also offers accommodation. From here one can drive via the Nzhila area, Dundumwenzi Gate, to Kalomo and Livingstone..

Just fabulous being in Zambia's remote bush with all of the wildlife you can imagine. Just be aware of the Tsetse fly as the are a bit of a problem - take Dettol or a "flicker" to try to keep them at bay, and wear ankle boots just in case you stand on a snake or scorpion etc.

Kafue is the 5th largest Park in the World...we did not even know this till we went there! The entry fees into the Park are some of the lowest we have encountered in Africa. There is plenty accommodation around, from overpriced safari camps to low budget self-catering campsites and chalets. However, the roads and distances between camps and sights are poor and long and this could effect you overnight plans quite a lot. The Chinese are building roads and a Hydro Electrical power plant in the area, which will enable more tourists and development to reach the Park. This could be good or bad, depending on your outlook on things. I would say get in while you can, while it is still relatively unspoilt and amazing to see. Stock up on fuel and supplies if you are traveling by road and on your own. There are restaurants(very expensive and few and far) and local bars and shops if you are adventurous and want to be the center of attraction... This is one for the bucket list of adventure tourists

Not one of the crowded national parks in Zambia, so chances are good that you're the only guest at your lodge/campsite or even in the park.
In the green season it's a bit difficult to spot and track the animals, but doable. In the dry season it should be on your list if you're traveling Zambia.

A huge and extensive park ... wildlife at its best. The terrain is rather bumpy .... the safari is best done in a Game Vehicle. We got to see some puku ... warthog ... fox ... elephants and two lions. A great experience. But please ... douse yourself with repellant .. the tsetse flies are vicious.
