The starting point of the rail trail. Stop in and check out the depot. Very friendly and helpful people. Then take a nice walk out ride on your bike on the trail.

My husband and I love local history and search out these small museums that are lovingly cared for by volunteers. If you're a train buff, you should definitely check out Hopewell depot. The building that houses the memorabilia was the original train station. It was really something to consider what a hub of activity this junction was from the 1800s to the first half of the 1900s with trains carrying cargo and passengers from and to all directions. We had a terrific guide who also took us up into the replica of the signal house. Piece of advice though...be sure to call in advance to check that someone is there before you make the trip. There's no admission but I think a modest donation of $5 a piece is worth every penny considering the work that went into preserving an important part of our industrial history. And after you finish with the museum, there is the rail trail that you can walk or bike on that is the former east/west route of one of the trains.

The Town had only minimal involvement with the Depot's restoration. A group of volunteers is responsible for the restoration, maintenance and Expansion of the Depot and its facilities..

Volunteers have rebuilt this historic train station which services as a rail head for the Dutchess rail Trail. Rest room Facilities have recently been added. Quaint little museum in the station

We came from Rockland County to see this; but it was worth it! Especially if you love learning about the railroading industry, and/or local history, this place was fantastic! The "tour guide" really made the place come alive! The refurbished Hopewell Junction Railroad Station IS the museum, plus it houses some artifacts on local history, like milk bottles from the Borden plant which was housed on the adjacent property (Did you know that Elmer's glue was started by the Borden's company?). This museum, and the very economical restrooms across the rail-trail (Thirteen miles down from this museum, along the rail-trail, is the famous Walkway Over the Hudson.), are immaculate! And, the museum is free--but worth giving a donation.
