The wildlife in the park was great.
Our family stayed for one night in a chalet. The chalet was old and badly maintained and we had small insects falling onto our bed from the grass roof during the night.
The staff allowed a group of campers to have a loud party and play music in the camp site until late in the evening. We were unable to listen to any of the night sounds in the bush.
Based on our experience we definitely won’t visit the park again, which is a real pity because it is the only sanctuary for rhinos in Botswana.

3rd time staying at Rhino, as it’s ideally located between the border and the Delta.
The chalets are falling apart and in need of a refurbishment.
The ‘restaurant’ never has the full availability of the menu and cooking is slow and not that good.
Still a good opportunity to see game and the park is well tendered.

We stayed in a family chalet. The chalets are horrible. Very dirty, drafty, and no cutlery or towels. Linen is provided, but due to the cold we slept in our own sleeping bags. In addition, for the 3 of us, we had to pay Pula400 as a conservation fee when entering the rhino sanctuary. In my view, it’s not worth it and should be avoided at all costs.

Khama Rhino Sanctuary was the first self-drive safari on our 2-week trip to Botswana. We enjoyed spotting the animals - rhinos, giraffes, antelopes, warthogs and birds. The only downside was that we had hoped we could hire a guide on the spot to accompany us in our car, but were told there was nobody there who could do so in spite of ten or so staff members sitting by the entrance two hours before closing time. ;) We did love the experience though, the landscape and the wildlife viewing were great.

Enjoyed the self game drive, although the morning was hot we easily spotted animals seeking shelter from the sun in some shady tree areas. We were fortunate to spot an abundance of Rhino as well as Zebra, Giraffe, Impala, Waterbuck and various BirdLife. You need an AWD or 4X4 to self drive the sandy roads or book a drive with a guide at reception area. Ring your ID as they will need it to make copies when registering you. Only thing we spotted that needed attention was the Toilets! Urinals we’re flooded and so was the wash basin. Hopefully that gets sorted out quick.

It’s an amazing place with 57 white and 7 black rhinos at the moment (as we were told by the local guide). The sanctuary is covering more than 8.5 thousands hectares, so we were very lucky to see a few rhinos of both species. It’s defiantly worth one good morning game drive!

I have hardly ever felt less welcome than I was when entering Khama. The lady in the reception is incredibly rude. The staff in the restaurant were not particularly happy to see us either, so we ended up leaving for our camp. The camp sites are good and private, and so is the reserve itself.

Camped here as part of a group tour. Was great to go for a 4x4 tour in the afternoon and get close up to rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests and various antelopes. Unfortunately no big cats though. Facilities were fine, but it was absolutely freezing overnight (-5 degrees) so make sure you have a good sleeping bag and warm clothes if you’re camping in winter.

Camped one night - July 2021. Friendly reception, clean campsite with awesome trees. Birdlife was amazing with nice sightings of variety of animals. Ablutions clean with hot showers. (Shower heads are low and tall people need to bend their knees to get under the shower - a minor hick-up though). Will definitely stay again.

After so many years of being a regular Khama Rhino visitor, thought I'd finally share my over the years experience.
Normally I do self drives with friends usually on the way to my hometown (Palapye). The staff is always sweet (bring your I.D). Locating the animals is always so easy though at times the Rhinos and Giraffes are difficult to find 🤦. But overall the drive around the sanctuary seeing all the animals is super refreshing.
I've spent a night in one of their A-line chalets before. The rooms were clean, I wasn't really impressed with the cleanliness of the floor of the outdoor shower, the toilet was sorta okay.
As for the toilets in the sanctuary itself for public use during drives, they are not really well monitored but they are okay-ish.

Hi there. How well equipped are the chalets? I would like to know if they have utensils, crockery and cutlery, or should I bring along my own?

Is it possible to get to the Khama Rhino Scantury by public transport from Gabarone? Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Written April 12, 2016
I think you would be able to get public transport as for as Serowe, but not sure after that, If there was enough people I suppose one of the local combi taxi's would take you.

Can you do volunteer placements here, helping the staff with the animals (cleaning enclosures, preparing feed, planting etc)?
Written March 11, 2016
There are no enclosures as this is totally open rural sanctuary, The sanctuary has a web site for you to contact them and see if they have any type of volunteers at all
