Who knew that kids were so into hard labor ?!?

So we live near this attraction, and have never really taken the time to dig. So we decided to give it a shot. We really had fun, yes it is a little hard, but it FUN. We dug for two days (instead of the original one day as planned). So you know it had to be fun, right? We found... More

We went teens and they had great time looking and breaking rocks to find the diamonds. Even the adults were involved. We spent hours there. They have a cafe if you didnt bring food. A really nice gift shop. Plus if you cant find any of the diamonds you can always buy a bag of gemstone and pan for them... More

My scout troop took a weekend trip to the Herkimer Diamond mines, staying at the KOA campground across the street with a number of other scout troops. The HDM is one of two places in town where you can dig up and keep diamonds. "Real diamonds?", you ask. Well.... yeah. There are carbon diamonds and there are silicon diamonds, with... More

Because my in laws live about 10 miles away, my family spends time at the Herkimer Diamond Mine at least three or four...or five...times every summer. My son and husband love to go into the mine, but we end up purchasing a lot of bags to use at the sluice table, too. Needless to say, we now have drawers full... More

For those that aren't rock hounds this is an open pit mine were you are able to go out and hunt for Herkimer diamonds. (Water clear quartz crystals) To hunt effectively you need sunscreen (or cover up), proper tools, some safety gear, and sturdy shoes. The museum has a video you can watch for tips. The longer you can spend... More

If you have some elementary school kids 6 or 7 and older and are in the Cooperstown area and you don't just want to do baseball, this is interesting. I like this better than the usual " mining for gems" activities since it is the real thing and you have to work for it, You need a hammer, goggles (... More

This is wonderful if you are traveling with children and they need to burn off steam. The point is to bring a pickaxe, buy goggle and dig in a pit for quartz-like rocks called Herkimer diamonds. You get to keep everything you find. And you can buy jewelry made form Herkimer diamonds in the store. When i thought I I... More

My boys and husband had a blast out in the mines. They enjoyed the hunt and were thrilled with the things that they found.

I overheard my sister say that she had never been to the Herkimer Diamond mine so se gave her a trip there as part of her Christmas! Six months later she gathered her two granddaughters, significant other and we were off! The video was a little over the top as far as what to expect but... the price is reasonable... More
