Although I love my pets, I wasn't prepared for how affected I would be by Hartsdale Pet Cemetery. It always struck me as a little "over the top," but now that I've experienced it as a visitor, I feel differently. This sweet, little cemetery is dedicated to domestic animals, including monkeys and at least one former circus lion, as well as human companions who can't bear to be parted from their loved ones even in death. The inscriptions and unique touches to the headstones, such as inset pet portraits, are oddly more personal than those in exclusively human cemeteries. Perhaps human companions mourning an animal loss feel freer to authentically convey their grief?

Regardless of the answer, I strolled the grounds on a beautiful autumn afternoon for well over an hour, and I would definitely return at other times of the year, particularly spring as I spotted some flowering trees on the property. The grounds are spectacularly maintained and more like a garden than a cemetery. The small staff is welcoming to visitors. Don't miss the war dog memorial, which is the cemetery's centerpiece. This bronze German shepherd began as a tribute to canine soldiers during World War One. It is also worthwhile to read up on the history of the cemetery and its establishment by a New York City woman who was saddened to see beloved pets set out for trash collection because their human companions had no way to legally inter them within a crowded metropolis.

The cemetery is accessible by MetroNorth commuter train from Grand Central station in New York City. The cemetery is about a 15 minute walk from the Hartsdale train station, the last leg without a sidewalk. For those who are driving, parking is limited. It is easily identifiable from the street. The cemetery is not wheelchair accessible, and some of the narrow hillside pathways may pose problems for people who use assistive devices.

I have been dealing with Hartsdale for many years and have three dogs buried at the site. The staff is wonderful.A walk through this beautiful place brings tears to your eyes when reading the heart wrenching thoughts and love for their animals which many have inscribed on their tombstones!!!As an aside, there is a lion buried there and many celebrities have chosen Hartsdale for their animals.

I've visited this cemetery with others to bury or visit their beloved dogs or cats. If you visit this cemetery developed at the end of the 19th century you are consumed by love which people have had for their beloved pets. I wasn't fortunate enough to have this kind of connection. Visiting this cemetery has an effect that is incomparable to cemeteries which many of us have been exposed to....often with ambivalent feelings. Not so at the dog cemetery. Visit. It's meaningful.

I am a veterinarian. No veterinary discount despite how much $ they make on us.
I had to cremate my 8yo cat. I’m a veterinarian in the community for over 25 years, I take care of multiple police dogs, historically there has been some courtesy with fees since they make money on us.
Fine, I had to cremate my cat, I did what I needed for him.
But I’m not impressed with the woman who asked for my money, nor the person upstairs who didn’t show face when I asked for some courtesy for the clients I send for cremation and burial.
So, you will no longer be recommended.
Go for Final Gift in New England.
Enjoy my $600. Wasn’t asking for anything for free, just some courtesy as was done years previously.
I recommend you discuss dealing with people and grief with the woman at desk because she is worthless when it comes to compassion.
I will compliment Carlos who was very courteous and efficient. Obviously he is not part of your deterioration from the years we used you as our main cremation service. He provided some comfort and reassurance that my cat’s ashes would be handled carefully.
You need to reevaluate your mission.

Despite my grief over the death of my beloved beautiful baby boy Rocky, I'm glad that I gave him a very nice memorial service and a beautiful place in the serene Peaceable Kingdom.

I'm proud that my little prince has a piece of this historic cemetery founded on the benevolence of a big-hearted vet and now run by people with the same compassion and kindness toward their clients.

I'm glad I picked Hartsdale Pet Cemetery. I love my baby so very much, and he deserves nothing less.

Pet cemetery is always clean & well taken care of. Parking is small, but never seem to have an issue, for people come & go in enough time for others to pay their respects.

They are very caring and lovely here. The cemetery is very well maintained. Grounds are beautiful. I had my Siberian cat cremated here and they made everything very easy for someone who just lost a dear pet.

I have never walked through a cemetery crying until today. I could feel the loss of each family. Flowers are lined up to make the grounds beautiful.

We have had several of our dogs cremated here and the caring staff has been incredible. They truly understand the pain involved during this process and do everything possible to ease one's pain.
