Our group of four joined an additional six visitors for a tour of this fascinating house, decorated in an extraordinarily original, creative and organic style. As our group was rather large, at times we were split into two sections, each with its own guide. Our guides were accommodating, knowledgeable and very nice. It was also interesting to visit this site... More

This is an interesting day trip to Garrison. Easy to reach and not too expensive to visit, this is a "DIY Falling Water". Russel Wright was clearly a man of vision (maybe less so understanding of building materials.) It's a blast from the past and time capsule of the 60s. Groovy in many ways. Couple of things to know: this... More

This was an excursion that we had to research to be sure we would enjoy it. We found it on the Hudson River tourist web site. Through our research we realised that we wished to join a garden and house tour. It was a thoroughly rewarding experience to learn about Russel Wright and enjoy the haven he created.

The Tour highlighted the vision to create and use nature to live in. Inspired by nature which oriented daily living. The tours are over for this season but the trails are open and free. There would be much seasonal gardening interest such as: snow covered trees, mountain laurels, daylilies and the water features. I found the site as designed did... More

Overall, I recommend visiting this place, but I do have a few complaints. We booked the 1.5 hour tour. We did not enter the house until after 1 hour on the tour. The whole first hour was spent talking about Russel Wright, the grounds, and the featured guest artist. So much of this could have been left out. I really... More

Located on the Hudson River, about an hour north of New York City, Manitoga is the stunning natural county retreat of the designer Russel Wright, a home literally built into the walls of an old quarry, with the stone of the quarry providing floor and walls. It is a beautiful structure, perfectly reflecting the environment in which it is located... More

We visited for a tour of the home and grounds and enjoyed every minute. The grounds and home are perfectly built and well maintained currently. This tour would be very difficult for someone with physical disabilities which is one downside. The home was built for Russel Wright's desires, unfortunately not just for touring later. We did not go hiking after... More

There is no doubt that there are more sophisticated pieces of mid twentieth century architecture open for public inspection, think the Farnsworth House for example, but Manitoga allows a fascinating opportunity to get close to the work of a designer with broad impact on the period. Some elements of the house are a bit cumbersome and un-refined for its date... More

We visited last weekend for a concert of minimal music (Cage, Reynolds, Reilly). Audience and musicians were sitting dispersed throughout this renovated quarry cum amphitheater (see photo). The studio and main house were on view and are a fascinating architectural and design experience a la Fallingwater & Kentucky Knob. And, the music was FABULOUS. Such a labor of love to... More

Manitoga is the site where the visionary designer Russel Wright created a most remarkable home in a place that was once a old quarry. The property and the buildings became a blend of man and nature at their highest level. It is a magnificent place to tour and enjoy. Surrounding the main area are beautiful trails for hiking. We love... More
