About
A Sacred Place of Peace and Healing - Home of the first Native American saint, Kateri Tekakwitha. The Shrine is home to Caughnawaga, the only fully excavated Mohawk village of that era. Nearby, the holy spring, whose water was used to baptize her, still flows here. Many pilgrims claim cures after drawing its crystal clear water and praying through the intercession of Saint Kateri. The Kateri Shrine Native American Exhibit is housed in a converted Dutch barn built in 1782 by Simon Veeder. The exhibit contains an impressive mixture of artifacts from many different Native American cultures. Also, a miniature replica of the village of Caughnawaga shows how the original Mohawk village appeared over three hundred years ago.

Blessings as we Journey
Sep 2019
The shrine area includes a chapel honoring St. Kateri, a museum with many native artifacts, a gazebo for placing personal prayer requests and a nature trail. It is a spacious outdoor area; very pretty, well kept, quiet and peaceful. I'm glad we took time for a visit while traveling across New York and being aware of many blessings during our journey.

A Visit to a Beautiful and Peaceful Shrine
Oct 2018
If you love to visit shrines of great American Catholic saints, this is a wonderful place to visit. We have now visited this place twice and have loved it both times. There is so much history here. This shrine has a darling museum that you can walk through by yourself in about a half hour. It houses all Indian artifacts with great descriptions of it all. There is an area where there are seats for people to sit for group tours and lectures. The grounds are just beautiful with lovely statues. There is a big lawn to walk around and there is a small chapel up by the road to Fonda where you can make a short visit there to the statue of St. Kateri Tekakwitha. You can light a candle for a special intention and leave a donation if you wish. The Shrine also has an outdoor shelter where Masses are held on the weekends. There is also a big hall where meetings and/or meals can be held. One of my favorite parts of the Shrine is the gift shop. This shop has all kinds of statues, medals, books, holy cards, etc. There are gifts for young and old and very reasonable. The staff is very friendly, too. The gift shop also has holy water that is from the spring down the road where the excavation site is located. You will feel very inspired if you visit this beautiful shrine. You can learn the whole story about St. Kateri Tekakwitha if you visit this shrine on-line.

St. Kateri, pray for us
Apr 2019 • Family
Our little girls love St. Kateri. The shrine is close enough for us to make an overnight trip of it. Glad we came and will likely return. The trails were a nice walk, 2 yr 9 mo old traversed almost all of it by himself. Iroquois village along the trail was an interesting surprise. Gift shop was closed which was stated in the website. Didn’t visit the museum portion because of little one.

Amazing!
Sep 2018 • Family
Ever since my Confirmation in 8th grade I have wanted to come to this shrine. I was a little nervous I would be disappointed after 20 years but I was so impressed. There is not a ton to do here however what is there is so powerful. They were able to excavate the village so you can stand exactly where the longhouses are outlined and know that she once stood in that very spot too. The spring where the water came from for her Baptism is also very powerful. The grounds are beautiful and so peaceful. It made a huge impression on my 5 young children as well. I am so thankful we made the 4 hr detour to see this very special place.

Spiritually Charged and Intellectually Provocative . . .

I have seen a number of museums of the Native peoples of the USA, and this one was worthy of the highest rating. But my primary reason for coming to the Shrine was to enrich my contact with beloved Kateri, who has been a positive influence throughout my life. This has indeed been happening. The walk around the archeological findings of a native american village and down to the sacred Spring, associated with Kateri's baptism was edifying serenity. The Finches, Warblers, Thrushes, Woodpeckers and friends were abundant and songful. I am looking forward to more!

A Truly Amazing Place to visit!
Jul 2017 • Family
I visited there several times over the past 2 years, it is a tranquil place of worship and praise. The staff is dedicated, and the prayer chapels and grounds are indeed, breathtaking and wonderfully kept.

An North American indigenous young woman growing in her faith during the 1600's.
Aug 2017 • Family
The opportunity to walk and be in the presence of these surroundings; where an indigenous young woman grew in her faith. Very serene and calming, providing any visitor to become reflective on this young person growing in faith and dealing with the challenges of that time period.

Our family stumbled on this wondrous site during the 1990's travelling to Baseball Hall of Fame. We stopped to check this out, and made sure to return the next day.

We returned again in 2017, what an awesome young woman!
