- Away With Anna - Travel Blog58 contributionsMust visit UNESCO World Heritage SiteThis impressive and ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must while visiting Lori Province. Several buildings around the grounds can be explored, each used for different purposes centuries ago. Take some time to admire the breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and plateaus. You can climb up to the top of some ruins at the back of the property for the best views of the entire complex. I highly recommend visiting the monastery with a group tour so you can get deep historical information about the complex as there is little to no information or plaques around the grounds for visitors. The historical significance is a huge part of experiencing this place. Or do research before visiting on your own! Ladies do not need to cover their hair in Armenian churches. The grounds are hilly and gravel in some parts so come prepared with sturdy shoes.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 3, 2024

Well worth visiting but note that it is in a remote area with few shops, cafes available. Very nice man in the monastery who tried explaining to me the significance of the building.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 14, 2024

While mostly painting is the striking feature in Armenia, here fantastic architecture is on display. A must see when in Armenia.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten May 12, 2024

Came here on a day tour from Georgia and this was our firts stop. The place is so quiet and peaceful, not many people around which made it extremely enjoyable for me. The inside is reallt beautiful, with lots of very old paintings. Definitely worth coming here.

No words can describe how we felt walking on the ground surrounding this very old Monastery! The gloomy weather actually gave it even more character! Just truly spectacular, and an absolute must do, as you're literally walking through Christian history!

Whilst the Monastery has, over its early history, suffered damage from an earthquake (the latest in 1988), and numerous attacks by invading armies, most buildings remain substantially as they originally were.
Situated towards the top of a mountain range, the Monastery overlooks magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
With most buildings being in good repair, there are several churches, library, gallery, refectory, bell-tower and mausolea to visit.
The church we visited had frescos, and although faded, were still evident.
A number, (apparently over 50), well-preserved Cross Stones are also on-site and available to see.
Obviously, the importance of this historical site is that it is UNESCO listed.

Armenian monasteries are a reflection of the people's faith. It was built by a great Queen who believed in Christianity. The location of Haghpat Monastery was chosen so that it overlooks the Debed River in northern Armenia's Lori region. It was built, not on a peak, but halfway up a hillside on a site chosen to afford protection and concealment from prying eyes and also in response to a kind of monastic humility.
