We found our way to Rockaway by accident - as visitors to New York we just got on a ferry to take advantage of a cheap water tour of the area and ended up in Rockaway on a cold April afternoon. This was the first bar we stumbled into and within moments the bemused locals had taken us to their hearts and were chatting away trying to understand why these two crazy Brits had pitched up. This felt like a real American bar experience compared to the flashy venues in Manhattan and was full of character and drinks prices to die for compared to over the water. I could have easily spent a few more hours there but we had to be back in town so needed to get the boat back.

Dropped into Healy's a long time Rockaway ba for a beer on a hot day,r the bartender was friendly and welcoming and when I asked for a pint of tap beer the owner Tom came over and suggested I try it from a frozen mug, as he pointed out the frozen mug freezer. The beer was ice cold and delicious and the atmosphere was everything you could expect from a local gem. Worth the trip and will try to make my way back on the next hot day!

Healy's is not a tourist trap. It's a neighborhood bar frequented by Rockaway locals who are an authentically friendly bunch. Show them some respect, and you'll find yourself treated to great storytelling, memories of Rockaway past, and local travel and dining tips if you're from out-of-town. Some of the other local bars in this part of the Rockaway peninsula can be kind of "red-necky" but the folks who frequent Healy's seem to be a bit more open-minded.

A dive bar at its very best. Well-priced drinks, friendly bartenders and a good place to meet friends. And some of the best local musicians at the beach!
