If you are a cheese lover, this is sure to please. It’s well worth it to buy the slightly more expensive 10 year aged variety. Otherwise, it’s a good place to buy gourmet snacks and maple syrup.

Great cheese, great cheese spreads, really great pretzels. Sweet and helpful staff. This iconic store looks the same as it has for years and gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. The cheese is the best and we always make sure that we make a quick run up to the River and stock up before the weather turns. I just wish that they would bring back their old River Rat sweatshirt, the one that had the small embroidered River Rat on it...mine is getting a little ratty.

On our last morning in Clayton we stopped in to buy on the way home. We brought a cooler for the cheese!!
Such a cute little store. It was not busy at all, as we visited on a Thursday morning. There were a couple others in the small store. I am sure on weekends this place is hopping.
We bought 4 bottles of Thousand Island Dressing, and 5 bricks of cheese. It is all so good!!
Exciting to watch the workers thru the window!

While in Clayton we decided to see what the 1000 Islands River Rat Cheese shop was all about. The shop has a variety of cheeses and candy. I know some of the cheese is made locally; however, the prices were a bit more than we were willing to pay. Samples would have been nice, and maybe would have convinced us to make a purchase....

Since we like cheese curd, we decided to stop in while visiting the area ~ in mid-May.
It's a nice store with a lot of different purchasing options.
While we did buy a couple varieties of cheese curd, we won't stop in again.
The young female counter person was very cool to us ~ especially after she saw our masks - no profanity on the masks ~ she must be "woke" and intolerant of others; not a place she should be working. Fortunately it was the last day of wearing them as ordered by our NYS czar.
I'm being generous in giving an "Average" rating ~ because of the attitude; a worse attitude would have been a "Poor" rating. Cordial and friendly would have been a "Very Good."

Cheese ! Cheese! Cheese! Please. And, more. If you like cheese, you are in the right location. A lot of variety of cheeses await you in all sorts of packages. Watch the staff behind the windows prepare the cheese curd. There are so many flavors. Other delights include candy, coffee, and flavored vinegars. Yum.

River rat has a good number of different cheeses, sweets, crackers, sweatshirts, etc. at fair prices. The store is not cramped, and the employees are there if you need help. We were able to get some cheese and crackers that we like. I just wish they had some refrigerator magnets with the 1000 Island theme.

Fun spot to stop at while walking through Clayton. Delicious cheese, loads of variety. Many other snacks and delights to be had as well. I imagine this spot is popular with the locals as well as tourists. Highly recommend.

We stopped in River Rat Cheese while staying in Clayton. What a great place. Not a big store, but a large variety of items. If you need a specific type of cheese, this is the place. They have all kinds of bagged candy, crackers, dressings, marinades and even some seafood/fish. We got two really nice pieces of haddock here. Don’t forget to try the cheese curds. They’re certainly tasty.

Our store may not be a little smaller, but we've got big flavors packed inside! You're almost guaranteed to find some cheese that you'll fall in love with. Be sure to give us another visit whenever you're in the area. We'd love to have you back.
Best,

One of the best stores in Clayton. Loved the variety of cheeses and various products offered. We got the 16 year old cheese and it was wonderful. Pricey, but wonderful. Also the onion cheese which is super, melted on hamburgers is extremely good.
Store very clean. Covid shields around checkout clerks. Free parking on street. Easy to locate on James Street. If we ever get into that area again....we will NOT fail to go back to this store!!!! Thank goodness they ship....to Pennsylvania in the cooler months.

Bringing two 9-year-old kids to Alexandria Bay for the first time. Would this be a fun place to visit.

My kids always loved to shop at River Rat Cheese, but it is a store. That being said, Clayton is a nice village to visit. Much different feel than A-Bay. There is a nice paved sidewalk to walk along the river with benches to sit and watch the river "traffic." There is also the antique boat museum which houses beautiful wooden boats that were once the mode of travel on the river. Lots of good places to eat too.
