We were exploring the Erie Canal region and discovered this location almost by accident. We arrived early. The staff on site was very friendly and we were invited to go on a self-guided tour of the grounds after viewing a short film about the site. Within a short time we were met by Joan DiChristina, who has been involved in the preservation and development of the landing for many years. While the exhibits are excellent, the background that she gave during our tour was especially valuable and appreciated.

I would recommend this site for everyone. It is much more than a simple historical building. The grounds, buildings and exhibits have been developed and restored with great care by community volunteers who are obviously a very dedicated and talented group.

With thousands of canal boats which wore out in about 12 years the Erie Canal needed significant boat repair and construction infrastructure. Chittenango Landing has 3 drydocks and a boat building shop reconstructed from accurate archeology. A photo from the 1800s shows the landing very much as it is today. A canal boat reconstructed in sections shows construction details. The long tow path invites walking or bicycling and there is enough water in the old canal for kayaking. Rental kayaks and bicycles are available at the Landing. Knowledgeable helpful staff will answer questions.

This museum allows you to tour at your own pace and to touch almost everything. It's a great learning experience. I only wished there was someone working in the various period buildings to answer questions. The person in the bookstore was knowledgeable and appropriately chatty, but he could not be inside and outside simultaneously. Still, this museum was truly engaging.

Showed up on a Wednesday afternoon to find the place locked up tighter than a drum. The sign on the door listing their hours showed that they should have been open; as well as the hours listed on the website. We called from the parking lot to see when they would open and got a recording, left our information and didn't receive a call back. Change your sign and website please.

We stumbled on this place by accident and are so glad we did. The video and self guided tour through the original site (some original items and some recreations) were wonderful to experience.

we discovered this wonderful place during our bike ride on the Erie Canal tow path trail. So amazing to see this little piece of American, and canal, history. So glad we rode far enough to make this discovery. A must visit for history buffs.

Very informative and well maintained museum. I enjoyed learning about the history of the canal as it pertains to the Chittenango area. This is a Must-See when in the area!

One of several canal related museums, but this one focuses on the boats used on the Erie Canal so long ago.

Chittenango Landing is a great place to take your children to see New York State History live. Special weekends have blacksmith, boat makers, craftsmen and historians tell stories of the Erie Canal. Elementary and middle school children can go on class visits and participate in activities at the museum. You can coordinate your visits, go to Chittenango in the morning and the Rome, NY Erie Canal Village and take a ride on a barge. Even as an adult, it's a fun day to review local history.
