The Vanderbilt Museum is located on the 43-acre waterfront estate of William K. Vanderbilt II, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. His “Eagle’s Nest” mansion is itself a museum that preserves a privileged way of life from America’s Jazz Age through the Great Depression, made possible by the family’s railroad fortune. In ocean-going yachts, Vanderbilt circumnavigated the globe in the 1920s and 1930s. He brought back thousands of marine, animal, insect and bird specimens and cultural artifacts that form a second museum of notable cultural, educational and historic value. The state-of-the-art Reichert Planetarium, with its 60-foot dome and theater, is the largest astronomical facility on Long Island. Throughout the year, the Museum offers intriguing programs for all ages, which are based on the animal habitats, large marine and natural-history collections, the mansion and Vanderbilt family history, and include extraordinary celestial shows on the planetarium dome.

We stayed overnight in Oheka and then toured both Oheka and Vanderbilt. It was a great opportunity to enjoy a slice of life on Long Island's Gold Coast. The planetarium show was boring for an adult. Kids would fine it entertaining. The tour was outstanding....More

Most of the Vanderbilt houses tend to be gaudy, but this one was actually tastefully put together and on a gorgeous location on the sound. Very enjoyable tour, though we had to leave early to make our planetarium show. I am recovering from a broken...More

We haven’t been to the planetarium since we were young, it brought back memories. However it looks smaller now that I am older. We watched the night skies live. However the narrator was boring! Overall it’s a nice place to go on a date!

The house tour was led by a fun and informative guide- the house and furnishings are absolutely beautiful! The tour is most definitely worth it and allows you to see rooms you otherwise could not visit.

This was an interesting tour of a post-Gilded Age mansion owned by William K Vanderbilt III. An avid yachtsman, he traveled the world and went on many safaris and expeditions. At first glance, the mansion/museum just looks like another Spanish Villa, but the estate has...More

About 45 minutes- 1 hour. But you can tour the grounds at you leisure. And there is a planetarium and a small natural history museum also.
