Great view from the fire tower! Hike up wasn't difficult. The area around the fire tower is a little cluttered with rather ugly communication towers. we hiked up the trail, which is nice and then we walked down the road. be careful in the parking area. there is a trail, to the left of the kiosk, that does NOT go to the fire tower. in fact it goes in the opposite direction.

We had a nice hike up to the top of the Mt. Ninham fire tower. We parked near the road and walked up a dirt road that took us about 15 minutes. Then we walked up to the top of the tower which was approximately 8 stories. It was in the fall and the view was spectacular. I had a zoom lens on my camera which actually captured a view of the Manhattan skyine. Take a pair of binoculars with you on a clear day for a view of NYC.

Nice hike up a dirt road to a beautiful view from the fire tower. It's too bad the walk is along a dirt/gravel road. But once at the top of the fire tower, the view is wonderful. And thanks to the people who maintain the fire tower.

If you can survive the Gypsy Trail Road, which is no more than pavement on top of the old horse and buggy road, you will be rewarded with a lovely, gentle grade up the tower road to the fire tower and its impressive views. The road up Mt. Ninham is easily located with a large DEC sign for the multiple use area. Drive up the road 1/3 mile to a little parking area, and hike the remaining 1/2 mile with about 400 ft of elevation change. The fire tower is tall at over 80 ft. but a great view can be seen halfway up. Views ranging from the distant Catskills to the Bear/Harriman Park, Beacon Mt., and into Connecticut can be seen. A hidden gem in this part of the State that would be great for a young family. The State Forest has multiple hiking / biking trails and the few bikers I talked with stated that the trails were quite good and fun.

The fire tower has some amazing views, but can get crowded and parking is a problem. It is 3/4 of a mile up a dirt access road and appox 120 steps up the tower. Beware that sometimes the graffiti can be not appropriate for small kids.

Easy walk to tower. Only complaint - sometimes when I have gone , you have to contend with teens smoking weed and hanging out in tower.

I'm going with five stars, because while this is a short hike on a dirt road, it makes it possible for anyone in the family to make it to the top and enjoy amazing views of the region. The hike goes up for the whole half mile or so, but the path is wide and the footing is sure, so just take your time if you have non-hikers in the group. Or have the kids jog back and forth while the rest of you rest! The fire tower is well worth going up in and was well maintained when I was there. Definitely bring a camera! This also makes a great "quick stop" without a lot of commitment for someone who just wants to get outdoors for a bit.
The road there is windy and narrow, but GPS took me right to the parking lot, no problem.

There are several hiking paths. We decided to take the easy one that is very wide comfortable hike up to the Nimham Mountain fire tower. that the road up as far as you can to the upper parking area. Along the way there are some small shelters made from stone and earth. Once you get to the top of the mountain there's the fire tower with breath taking views and worth the walk up the tower.
