Very nice small art museum. Well-lit, spacious, modern. Polite staff. Appropriate and affordable pricing. Recommended to all, and I would visit again.

This is a lovely little museum in a small Mohawk River town that is the home of the BeechNut company. On the weekday my wife and I went, we were the only ones there. There are a number of Winslow Homer paintings and on the day we were there, a fascinating collection of photos of Grange halls around central New York was on display.

The Arkell Museum features top level American paintings and artworks. It was founded by owner of the Beech-Nut Company, Bartlett Arkell, for the edification of his employees and townspeople.
Originally he had copies made of the great Dutch masterpieces. In this way the local people, who did not have the means to see the originals in Europe, could have access to the artworks in this form. The copy of the "Night Watch" by Rembrandt is still on display [A bit odd in modern times].
The collection grew as gifts from Mr. Arkell's private collection. The great emphasis is now on American Artists. Whistler, Moses, Homer, etc.
The paintings are in very good condition and well displayed throughout the galleries.
The original building and the new wing ae interesting in themselves as well.

Art gallery!! Library!! Museum!! Classical music festivals!! Bicycles welcome!!
Love this place!
It would be nice to see them do more with the grounds by way of making it into both a perennial food and artists garden to sit, marvel and paint in...but other than that,I really have no complaints at all.The place is great! Art by local artists is featured month to month and for sale on a regular basis!
Well worth stopping in for a peek,no matter what you're there for!

We'd been here before and enjoy returning to see the most current exhibits. This museum is a great place to visit for local Mohawk Valley history. Their display of Beechnut memorabilia is most interesting to a person in demographic. Some of the paintings are just wonderful to view as gems we have in this locale. A great museum to appreciate art and history.

My wife and I had the opportunity to explore the Mohawk valley this past week. The Arkell Museum in Canajoharie was one of our planned stops. Although small, the Museum had selected works by American Artists like Winslow Homer, Edward Gay, Thomas Hart Benton, William M. Chase, Childe Hassam and Albert Bierstadt. An absolutely amazing painting by Edward Gay titled "Mother Earth", is a must see. The museum touches in detail the life and contributions of the Arkell family, founders of the Beechnut brand and products, and their contributions to art and the broader community of Canajoharie through the decades. If you enjoy American Art and History this museum gives you a touch of both.

Small museum depicting the history of the town and some good pieces of art.
Most interesting is to talk with the staff about the town and its relationship with the Beechnut company.

I was not disappointed - I saw multiple Winslow Homer paintings .Some really great art in a small town. It has been years since I was in the library and art gallery. It has really changed and is now a larger beautiful building. My only disappointment was that the expansion didn't create even more exhibit space for the truly wonderful art that the museum owns. The history of Canajoharie and Beech-Nut was totally enjoyable.

Thank you for visiting! We're glad you enjoyed seeing us again and the "new" galleries built as part of the 2007 expansion. It never seems like enough room, but they do allow us to have even more work on display at any one time. We do have thoughts for the Great Hall wall opposite the big Erie Canal image... Stay tuned!

I needed some time to myself. Stopped by to stroll. Well I am glad. The Arkell Museum is beautiful, vast and filled with priceless artifacts of note. Art, history and architecture too. The staff were excellent...received a personal tour. 4 hours later I left a better person.

Last week we visited the Canajohari Library and Arkell Museum. We did not know what to expect but what a suprise was waiting for us. The founder of the museum was Bartlett Arkell CEO of the Beech-Nut Packing Company. In 1924 he gave his home town a library and later a museum. It is an inspiring place to be with friendly and helpfull staff and an extraordinary art collection. The work of artists like Thomas Eakins, George Inness and Homer Winslow are on display. The company contracted an artist like Norman Rockwell to make posters for their products. It is an interesting place to spend some time and enjoy the gift Bartlett Arkell gave to us all.
