Historical Church Being Destroyed by Neglect
Aug 2018
This church was built in early Spanish Colonial times, prior to 1600, I believe. I used to live in the area and went to school a short ways from here. At that time (1960's) it was not in good repair but on a revisit in the 1980's it had been renovated and I got access to see the murals on the interior. Now, this building is again in poor repair and the murals are reportedly being destroyed by rainwater leaking through the roof. Contrary to other recent reviews of this site on tripadvisor, I know of no renovation work going on, or planned. A real shame as this is a historical site and at one time was something well worth visiting. BTW- the grave markers in front of the building are real. Many, many Zunis are buried in this small yard, several layers deep, reportedly.

Wonderful murals

This trip we found out that the church is being restored, but is should be visited when it reopens.
We have visited in the past and the church is really beautiful inside. We were lucky to have a tour. Actually we became part of a school tour. The walls are covered in murals painted in the late 1900s. Our tour guide was the son of the man who painted them. The son was the son chosen to help the father with the murals. His words were truly moving and educational. He said that they hoped to do some restoration because one of the walls was failing.
We love this site and hope it open aagain soon.

Outside Only

Church is currently going to be restored so you cannot go in at this time. You may take pictures from the outside of the church and the cemetery. Still worth going, especially if its included on your tour.

Who will help restore this old church?
Sep 2017 • Couples
This old church is located right in the heart of the Zuni Pueblo, however it is no longer able to accommodate tours due to water damage inside. Perhaps the historical commission of New Mexico will help support restoration in the near future.

National Parks Service rebuild of old Spanish church
Oct 2016 • Friends
Until the 1970's (and for hundreds of years before then) this church was in ruins. It is not a consecrated space and the site belongs to the Pueblo of Zuni. The original church, built in the 1600s by Spanish invaders possibly using forced labor, was in ruins when the Park Service stepped in and rebuilt it. As of this writing, (September 2017), there are new structural issues that may impact access so check with the Zuni Visitors' Center for more info.
Inside there are some interesting murals that reflect one person's concept of the relationship between Catholicism and the Zuni Faith.
For an idea of what the original structure was like before the rebuild check with the Visitors Center about a tour of Hawikuh, the town where the first documented contact between Spanish conquistadors, in this case Coronado's slave Estaban, and Native Americans first took place. Hawikuh is one of the most historic places in America.

Beautiful old Spanish church no longer open to the public. This historic church is in need of both interior and structural renovation work. Hopefully SHPO and the federal government will step up to the challenge and preserve this important piece of history. Undoubtedly, donations and grants for renovation work would be a blessing.

We have visited this space several times over the last 20 years and the murals inside are spectacular, but the building is having major water and structural issues.

Stunning Murals!
May 2016 • Friends
Book a tour to this church at the Zuni Visitor Center. Be prepared for a cold, damp, somewhat crumbling environment which will be worth every minute if you are interested in the murals within. Begun in the 70's by artist Alex Seotewa, the murals depict Zuni ceremonials. They are starting to fall off the walls, and will have to be removed if the church is to be restored. No photography is currently allowed, but some images are available on the web.
