This gem is off the beaten path, but well worth the drive to get there! The store is an amazing preservation of history. The personal attention visitors get is charming and unique. The Edmund family truly cares deeply for this town and it's past - they know the history and are excited to share it with their guests.

There's so much cool stuff in this museum! Donna Edmund gave my family and me a tour and made sure to show us all of the good stuff! She let my nephew mess with the safe, which was enormous. I love seeing all of the handwritten signs about why certain things are interesting or special. I highly recommend purchasing Donald Edmund's book at the gift shop next door, because there are so many interesting stories!

The museum was a general store that closed up in 1923 and was left intact until 1989 when it was restored. This is like walking back into time, and the owner has all the great stories surrounding each item in the museum if you are inclined to know more. No entry fee, donations accepted.

I visited the museum with a group from a car club. The museum owner, Don Edmund, gave us a tour and answered all of our questions. Museum is a general store that was closed in 1923 with everything in it, then re-opened in the 1990's. Fascinating look at things used in the 1920's. Will definitely come back to Chloride to spend more time the next time I am in southern NM. By the way, the 40 mile drive from interstate 25 is a favorite among motorcyclists and sports car drivers because of its many twists and turns.

We started at the Museum, but found the door locked. Sign said go next door to the Gift & Gallery. There we met the grown daughter of the Edmond family that first took the time, money, and energy to buy the buildings and then start restoring them. So after looking around in the gift gallery, and making a few purchases this gal then let us into the Museum Pioneer Store. She was so full of details and information, especially about the condition of the building before they cleaned it out & started restoration. Turns out there were some old timers who still lived in Chloride who were more than happy to share their memories & stories about the town & it's people. There were so many items to see and she was more than happy to expound on details, dates, and the why behind any of them you might ask about. Initially I believe we thought it might take us an hour, but all in all - because I tend to be curious and ask lots of questions, my guess is we were there about 2.5 hrs. So if you like to learn the history, and ask the questions, be prepared to spend more time so you can really relish this experience. I don't regret the extra time, not one bit (even if perhaps my hubby might have been ready to go sooner.) Just trying to make folks aware there is a great amount of things to see, observe, and ponder... so make time so you can truly enjoy your visit. It IS Worth the Trip...

We REALLY ENJOYED our visit to the town of Chloride and the museum which is actually a well preserved General Store with many of the original goods that were used and sold there. This attraction is way off the beaten track and the reward for making the trip is very personalized attention from the museum owner. He has information and stories about the town and towns people from it's beginnings until the 1920's when the town pretty much died. There is the Museum, a Gift Shop run by a collective of local residents, and a Restaurant which is closed on Monday & Tuesday ( we visited on a Tuesday ). There are also assorted pieces of equipment & memorabilia scattered around the town.
The Store ( Museum ) was built in 1880 by a Canadian who came to New Mexico for his health, and was operated until 1923. When it closed, the owners boarded the place up with all of the furnishings and some merchandise still inside. The building was purchased by the present owners in 1989, and has been fully restored, and has been opened as the PIONEER STORE MUSEUM. The Town's records from 1881 to 1923 were left in the building. These records are now being cleaned and will be added to the displays. The Museum is free but donations are appreciated to help keep it open and functioning.

This place is a step into yesterday. Gas pump is from 1960's, store has basic essentials and good bathrooms. Nothing else is anywhere nearby.

The original general store was locked up with all of it's inventory and sat for years. A family bought it and restored the building and contents so visitors can learn and experience the past. A must see on your vacation or travels.
