Absolute GEM and a must visit if in the area!!! Peter and Yvonne warmly welcomed my husband and I at 10am and graciously allowed us a wine and port tasting at that hour of the day. We sat at their table on the front porch, enjoying their stunning views of the vineyard, mountains, pets and chickens. It was a long, leisurely and relaxing experience with delicious tastes that we brought home with us. The white port has a wonderful surprise ingredient that totally surprised us and delights the palate!!! We loved our visit so much that we'll be back during Christmas week and looking forward to seeing this lovely couple again too!

We stopped in here while cycling from Oudtshoorn to Calitzdorp, and it really was one of the highlights of our entire holiday. Yvonne and Peter are fantastic hosts. Sitting their verandah and looking over their vineyards while tasting some exquisite wines and ports is an experience I'll never forget. It really is one of those unique, and in our case unexpected, experiences that make travelling so rewarding.

A wonderful authentic wine tasting experience. An hour of wine tasting with Peter, talking about his amazing wines and his life in general. It was priceless. Love the red wine and port. Such a humble and modest person. Can highly recommend!

Do not let the drive to this little gem deter you from tasting some of the best ports on this continent. Our charming host entertained us beside his vines under the Jacaranda Tree (unfortunately not in bloom). We tasted red wines and ports finishing off with a sublime white port and a sample of a very interesting cocktail. We bought a few bottles of course and look forward to sharing same with family and friends.

Upon arrival at Peter Bayly's winery, we were immediately welcomed as if we were old friends. Peter and his wife Yvonne told us the interesting story behind their winery, and invited us to sample a generous amount of wine. We bought as much wine as we could fit into our luggage. This is a definite stop when in Calitzdorp.

Peter Bayly Wines is situated in the secluded Groenfontein Valley not far from Calitzdorp on the Groenfontein road which eventually ends near the bottom of the Swartberg Pass and the Cango Caves. The vineyards are situated on the alluvial plain of the Nels River which also feeds the Calitzdorp Dam. We visited recently while traveling from Prince Albert to Calitzdorp and stopped in without booking (most sites recommend booking) to be warmly greeted by the family. There were at least 10 other people already there and as the front verandah where the tastings take place was full we ended up under the trees which was actually cooler. This boutique wine farm is quite small and only produces one white and two red ports and one red blend "The Peter Bayly III" which is a blend of three Portuguese grape varieties, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca & Souzao. Noting electric fences we were told that one of the main challenges here were baboons and birds raiding the vines. This for us was the highlight of our tasting experiences throughout the Karoo and Cape the hosting was friendly, personal, relaxed, informative and delicious. A new trick taught to us was using tonic with the white port which makes a delicious refreshing drink. A little off the well known R62 route but take the Groenfontein road through to Oudtshoorn and you will pass Peter Bayly Wines you won't be sorry especially if you like port. It is also an easy return drive from Calitzdorp. If visiting out of the main holiday periods it is worth phoning first to ensure they are open.

Peter and Yvonne are welcoming and generous with their wine tasting. The farm has a spectacular setting close to the cliff, and the wines/ ports are excellent.

Our favourite winery. My mother and I visit every year and enjoy sitting on the veranda whilst being talked through the latest on Peters wines, sheer indulgence! It’s our annual treat, the Groenfontein area around Calitzdorp is a magical area filled with special people and delicious eateries. We love Peters small bottles of Port and he has a wonderful selection of vintage bottles to satisfy all. We tend to stock up to last as through the year. His Wife Yvonne also sells wonderful stuffed piggies, ideal for gifts which support a local township project. Thank you to Peter and Yvonne.

A second trip to see Peter Bayly. It's worth the long adventurous ride to see how Peter and his wife run this gem of a vineyard. Leisurely, welcoming and very informal.
