Docent was very informative about the artists and the Taos society of artists and even the son had an amazing mechanical shop and 1940 mobile repair for airplanes. We easily spent 1.5 hours there at no charge but they do appreciate an donation to keep foundation going for the up and coming artists they are trying to educate and help.
The artwork shown was from Sharp, Couse and Gene Kloss as well. I'm generally not an art type person but found it very interesting.

This is the hidden treasure of Taos. People walk by without realizing this is one of the best collections in Taos . Couse and Sharp were essential to the founding of the Taos art colony. In addition to the extensive display of their art, there is usually a show by a Taos artist, currently some incredible works by Jivan Lee. Also, they are collecting and cataloging everything they can find about Taos art, Because of their academic bona fides, they are the recipients of many major art works by Taos artists. The recent opening of the Lunder Research Center is sure to make the Couse-Sharp house one of the premier sights for research on Taos artists. When you visit ask about the Lunder Research Center, you may be rewarded by a tour of that facility. To book a tour visit fill out the tour request form at couse-sharp.org/tour,

We were getting discouraged in Taos with museums being closed and restaurants not being open, and we almost were ready to head home a day early and miss the Couse-Sharp Museum. I’m so glad we didn’t. What treasure this museum is. Lynn was our docent and she was friendly, knowledgeable and absolutely loved her job. She patiently answered all our questions. When I made the reservation, I was told the tour would be two hours long. I didn’t understand how looking at two houses could possibly take two hours, but we spent 2-1/2 hours and I could have gone through the rooms one more time just to take everything in once again. You visit the studio of Joseph Henry Sharp, the church next door that Sharp purchased and which Couse later bought from him, the home of Irving Couse, his studio and his son’s workshop, and the lovely garden. Artworks of both artists fill the spaces as well as personal belongings and furniture. Truly a wonderful and memorable experience.

Steve gave us unlimited time with him as he led us through this outstanding museum.
The tour was very informative; we were able to ask any questions and it is lovely to be able to see things up close and read a lot of the available information. The Sharp studio has opened since I last was there and it is exceptional. This is just a very rare treat to see things mostly as they were left when the artists family lived there a century ago.

Roberta gave us an in-depth tour, with bonus time in the childhood playroom and machine shop. It pays to visit this site more than once, because there are so many layers to the stories embedded here. Like ancient Amber, new clues to the past can be revealed with the scrutiny of the present.

This is the actual house where the artist who produced the beautiful paintings for the Santa Fe RR and Fred Harvey company lived and worked. His studio is intact and there are nooks and crannies to be visited including a playhouse that was built for his niece. Rather then give you a blow by blow, I will just say that this is a must see while in Taos. This is part of the original arts colony that founded Taos.

I learned so much from this tour. This is not just another museum or historic site, this is very educational. Eanger Irving Couse & Joseph Henry Sharp were two of six artists to form the “Taos Society of Artists” in 1915. They formed an artists colony in Taos to depict what they saw of the "Old West" before it completely disappeared. These artists made Taos the art and tourism spot it is today. You see the artists houses, art studios, original furniture & household items. You also see pottery, beadwork and costumes used in their paintings. There is a hidden play room Couse built for his grandchildren, the Little Egypt outhouse Sharp built outside his second studio, the beautiful gardens Mrs. Couse designed, the garage turned machine shop that Mr. Couse's son built. All is pretty much how they left them years ago and full of historical pieces. This historic site is just minutes away from the Taos Plaza. Admission is free for individuals and small groups. Donations accepted.Tours are guided by appointment. Tour takes about 2 hours. Parking is available. A great place to see while in Taos.

The Site includes the home and studio of E. I. Couse, the first President of the Taos Society of Artists, and two studios of J. H. Sharp, a founding member of the TSA. Couse's home and studio are in tact, very much as they were at the time of his death in 1936. Included are more than 3 dozen paintings by Couse as well as his extensive collections of Native American pottery, santos, and Spanish colonial furnishings. The garden during the summer operating hours is spectacular and is situated on an escarpment overlooking a large pasture. The Site is only open May through October, but it provides a genuine experience with regard to the early Taos art colony and life in the Taos valley during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The Couse-Sharp historic site is, in fact, the home and studio where EI Couse lived and worked. The beauty is that it is the way he left it complete with his photography cubby hole, costumes, painting, collections of pottery and other effects used in his paintings. Couse and Sharp are two of the founding members of the Taos Society of Artists who made this corner of New Mexico famous early in the 20th centrury. The Sharp studio has now been opened and outfitted as it was at the time he worked there. All of the site requires a free docented tour but it is well worth it. The best part of all is that Couse’s granddaughter, Virginia Levitt, is there in person and you can visit with her about her family and the home and studios. Do visit the website and you will be inspired to visit.

Visiting the Couse - Sharp Historic Site is like stepping back in time and walking in the shoes of artists. Both recognized famous artists of the west, it is as fit they set down their brushes and allowed visitors to wander in their studios. In this day and age, it is amazing to see original art on display in such a relaxed atmosphere.
If you have any interest in art, the southwest, or Native Americans this site is worth the time.
