Once we arrived in Taos, we decided to visit Williams Lake the next day. After checking the reviews, we saw that it had snowed two days before. Being in our sixties, and just moderately fit, with a bit of hesitation, we decided to challenge ourselves and go regardless of conflicting reviews. Thankfully we had our poles and our hiking boots.
1. The slope is not too bad and is very gentle
2. The view is not much while you are going through the forest which is 3/4 of the way
3. After parking at the base, there was no clear mark to the trail
4. The trail is not marked clearly, especially at the beginning. once you get a bit further if you are on the right track (we were not but luckily ran into people who directed us into the right path) it would get easier.
5. once you get to the boulders and the lake, the scenery becomes more interesting.

In conclusion, go for the beautiful ride (fall colors made it gorgeous), the clean air, the exersise and the lovely view at the top.

This is a moderate trail and if u aren’t a fan of hiking don’t do it. It’s pretty hard trail in my opinion. Make sure u have a ton of water. The water level on the lake is pretty low but the view is worth the whole 4.2 miles journey

Great out and back hike. Snow capped mountains in view the whole way. Ended up at Williams Lake that was absolutely stunning. The beginning of the hike gets your heart rate up a bit but not really strenuous. Perfect morning hike.

The trail is a 2mile in, 2 mile out trail. Mostly up gentle incline in. If you are from a lower elevation where you live, this might take you a little longer because of the oxygen difference. Bring a walking stick and take your time. We started around 11am, took about 90 minutes in, we spent about 30-45 minutes resting and eating at the beautiful lake, and then about 60 minutes out. The lake is gorgeous. Make sure you bring sunscreen, the open areas around the lake are beautiful but very sunny.

This is a summer or early fall hike because it starts at over 9000' elevation and ends at the lake at the base of NM's highest mountain, Wheeler. This beautiful hike through forests and just below avalanche chutes is good for families with kids...for anyone who wants to see alpine New Mexico.

I hate to put a five on this because it almost killed this old lady. But it’s 2mi straight up a rocky path. Come prepared with different clothing types, it’s freezing at the top and will probably rain on you. Several people and dogs. View is worth it.

Just a perfect hike, albeit a little steep and rocky. Views at the lake, with snow still on the surrounding mountains in July were marvelous. I hiked part way up to Wheeler Peak while my wife waited at the lake. It is less than a mile to the tree line where the views are stunning. next time I plan to go to the top.

This is an easy-to-moderate hike out of trailhead a few miles from the Village. Most of it shaded by fir trees. In the middle of summer it is packed with flowers (columbines, lousewort, sainfoin, stonecrop but also (highly poisonous) hemlock and false hellebore). The hike is only miles and I highly recommend to go for Mt. Warner and Wheeler peak. You will enter alpine meadows alive with marmots and pika, with great views of the mountains and the valley.

We made this hike in August 2019.The weather was perfect, but it had been raining so there was some mud, particularly in the parking lot. The lake itself is so beautiful, nestled in alpine meadows with spruce trees. The lower part of trail is well maintained but some upper stretches have a few signs of erosion. Be careful!

The hike to the lake was a little more challenging than my wife and I expected. The trail was hard to follow even though there were markers. There were tracks leading of in all different directions. The scenery and the lake was beautiful. We turned towards wheelers peak. But once we got above the tree line we lost all signs of a trail and started post holing in waist deep snow, so we turned back defeated. The way down was quicker, cause we slide on our butts almost to lake. The hike was tiring but well worth it, and wheelers peak...we will be back!!
