Christopher “Kit” Carson, is perhaps Taos' most famous and controversial resident. He was a fur trapper among the earliest Western explorers, a scout during the first mapping of pioneer trails, a cattle and sheep rancher, a transcontinental courier, U.S. Native American agent, and an officer in the United States Army. Yet he was more than any of those things. Some people say he was a hero who was instrumental in opening up the West. Others say he was a rugged frontiersman who understood the ways of Native Americans better than any other Westerner. Still others maintain that he was an Indian hater whose only interest was to fight and kill Native Americans. He never accepted any of these labels, and neither have modern biographers who have portrayed him as an enigmatic Purchased by Kit Carson for his bride Josefa in 1843, this 3-room adobe home displays artifacts, antique firearms and other pioneer belongings, Kit Carson memorabilia and an exhaustive supply of books about New Mexico.

We haven't been to the Kit Carson Home and Museum in years, and unfortunately missed it during our last visit to Taos. It is well worth while, especially if you are unfamiliar with New Mexico history, Kit Carson in New Mexico, and the way people...More

A small museum but with a lot of information about Carson and his family. You get a good idea of the lifestyle of this famous frontiersman. The docent on duty was friendly and able to provide additional information about the family. And the greeter dog,...More

If you are a huge Kit Carson fan this might be good for you. Mostly it was kind of old and dirty looking (maybe by design). Mostly it was a film that had run on the History Channel. The house itself contained facsimiles of Kit...More

Kit Carson Museum provides a lot of the history of the man. A video is worth seeing. House and grounds well maintained. Parking is on street and sometimes hard to find

Thought I knew about Kit Carson., but I was wrong. Never imagined everything he did during his life. Museum needs updating but they are working on it.

We had young grandchildren with us and they didn't have the patience for a long structured tour. So nice to see the museum items at our own pace. Kids loved it. Grandparents did too. Wonderful.

We recently visited the museum for the 2nd time. Last year we were never acknowledged or offered help in purchasing tickets. When someone else came in the museum, they were greeted and helped at once. We tried again this trip with our children with us....More
