We enjoyed our 1.5 hour ride in San Cristobal New Mexico. The horses were well cared for, the equipment in good condition, our guide was hospitable, entertaining and gave supportive reassuring guidance, her name was Zoe. We had two adults and two 15 year olds in our party and a good time was had by all.

This was the best trail ride I have ever taken. Janelle was an excellent guide, she introduced us to our horses and their personalities. Then we took a beautiful ride through the mesa and foothills to the Rio Grande Gorge. This is not your typical well trampled trail, we went up and down hills and through the sagebrush. It was a beautiful ride at a comfortable place for beginners. Very memorable two hours and we are already talking about when we can do it again.

During our vacation we bailed on a previously arranged trail ride in CO so we needed to replace that activity during our time in NM...Google and some other research lead us to Rio Grande Stables leaving out of Taos Ski Valley.
After our previous bad experience in CO, we were a bit shy about choosing another value option for this trip but after a phone call we were comfortable enough to try RGS.....VERY happy that we did!
We met our guide and other staff in a trailer slope side at the Taos Ski Area....signed our paperwork (usual stuff), donned our helmets and drove the .1 mile up the parking area to where the horses were waiting. Now, if you do some research you will know that our last ride was abandoned based on the poor horse care we encountered in CO....NOT SO HERE! We arrived to meet three very nice, well fed and properly tacked horses waiting for us! After a quick briefing, demonstration and on-horse tutorial about how these horses respond to commands, our guide, Rachel, began leading us up the equestrian trails on the side of Taos Ski Area. What followed was 3 hours of fun, well lead riding in beautiful scenery amongst the aspens, pines and babbling streams on the mountain. The horses were sure-footed on the rocky terrain and Rachel was there to help and inform as needed.....
In all, a great day of riding in an awesome setting.....it even got our 12yo daughter's seal of approval for proper horse care and grooming!!
I highly recommend Rio Grande Stables!

Although the staff was friendly, this was NOTHING like it was described on their website..."provide you and your family with a safe, gentle introduction to horse back riding."
First, several of their horses are misbehaved and not well trained. One kept fighting with another and they still put them in line behind each other. The horse that kept getting harassed by the other one eventually threw our 15 yr old head first over her head & took off. Her wrist might be broken from trying to catch herself. Another was severely overweight and stopped every 12 feet to eat & would not respond when trying to move her along. But the ride took another turn for the worse when a jeep appeared out of no where and spooked the horses. One took off with my wife on it and she held on for dear life. The other took off but into thick woods at a full sprint. It would not respond to any calls or actions to stop. My friend was getting beaten up by branches and brush and literally had to dive off the horse at full speed to avoid being dicapitated or knock off by a tree. He suffered scratches, cuts and will be very sore tomorrow.
There were no defined trails and clearly horses not typical of a riding excursion company. There are plenty of other choices in the area - book with one of them.

This tour is in depth for 4 hours, Matt was great and explained everything we needed to know, you get to see the red river, and just ride the land. We were allowed to stop and take photos at certain points and we weren’t disappointed. The horses Matt had picked for us were great after giving a little information about each one of us he got it spot on. Everything about the stables were amazing. Great ride thank you. Well worth every penny, this is a must do if your in the area.

My sister and I took the 2-hour trail ride with Amelia yesterday and would not have changed a thing. I have taken other trail rides over the years but this by far was the best. Amelia was our wrangler. She was exceptional in her knowledge and care of the horses and the customer service she provided. She was very thorough in her explanations and safety check before the ride began. Rio Grande Stables breeds and trains their own horses so she knew every personality trait of the horses we were riding. Amelia took great care in picking the horses for our ride based on our experiences and how they got along with each other. It was obvious that our horses were very well treated. The views from the mesa and Red River Gorge were breathtaking. I highly recommend Rio Grande Stables!

Excellent short ride. The lady was friendly, knew the personality of the horses well. The path through the forrest is not flat, went up and down at times steeply. Good times.

We had an amazing 1h ride with Peyton and Hailey in one of the scenic trails close to the stables. This was the first time riding for our 13 years old twins and my wife and I have ridden only once before. However these horses are so well trained and well behaved and Peyton guided as so well that we greatly enjoyed the ride with absolutely no issues for the beginners we are. Would definitely recommend to anyone including absolute first timers. Great experience for families with kids and very reasonable prices too.

Our guide, Zoe, was absolutely wonderful and added so much to the trail ride! We did the 2 hr ride evening ride to the Rio Grande Gorge. It was absolutely stunning! Along the way, Zoe, helped explain the scenery, broke up the quiet, and gave us lots of laughs! Overall I would 100/10 recommended!

We had a horse back ride scheduled for the day in the Cibola National Forest but our ride cancelled without letting us know. Do we looked around at the last minute and found Rio Grande stables -- a 2.5 hr drive back through Santa Fe towards Taos.

It was a gorgeous drive to Taos and the ride itself was marvellous. Amelia, our host, was the best. She made our ride comfortable, enjoyable, and memorable. Thank you Amelia!

And thank you to Maya and Indeo for hauling us up and down the trails!
