Spend money to make money
Aug 2019
My experience was rather poor as billing at the end of the stay was NOT what was quoted and new charges were given without making us aware. If there was an issue or a mistake made - it should have been brought to our attention immediately and not when we are checking out.

As seen in other reviews, if you are looking for the big 5 you wont find them here.
There are plenty of buck and zebras and if you are lucky you may spot the elephants. Caged lions are also found near the restaurant.

The outdoor play area and restaurant pond leave nothing to be desired for, with broken equipment and a few ducks swimming in a badly maintained pond which is overgrown with slime and dying surrounding plants.

The other animal pens have 2 angry geese, shy rabbits and the odd emu with a scattering of peacocks.

The rooms are clean and neat - however one of our rooms had a broken shower door and the other room had a blocked shower drain.

Food/Beverage
-The coffee station in the living area ran out of milk by the afternoon and when we returned by 9 pm it still had not been restocked.
-The food was good however on on our 2nd night the buffet ran out of soup and dessert by 7:45 which left those arriving to dinner scrounging for what was left.
-The bar was not well-stocked as according to what was offered on the menu.

The television in the living space did not work the 2nd day which really left nothing to do when not on the game drives. There weren't even any board games or a deck of cards to allow guest to amuse themselves.

This business has great potential if the owner or managers would spend a little money to get more people to come in as day visitors.

Game Reserve delivered 4 of the Big 5
Apr 2019 • Solo
Easy to reach malaria free East London South Africa was enjoyable. The lodging appeared to be
basic more affordable creating a safari experience for families on a budget. I was there for a game drive and did not stay at this reserve.

Beautiful Game Reserve and Game "Safari"
Mar 2019 • Couples
The mPongo Private Game Reserve quite a large game & private hotel complex overall. We came here as part of a cruise ship excursion for a afternoon game drive in a typical safari 4x4 vehicle. Each vehicle holds 10 persons. At the beginning of the drive we drove by their large fenced-in lion area. We saw a couple of lionesses with their small cubs as well as many other large lions. Our drive lasted about 3 hours with one refreshment stop.

BOTTOM LINE: This is a very protected private reserve with safety fencing. We did see impalas, quite a few giraffes, wart hogs, elephants, gembok's, nyala’s, zebra's and springbok’s. We saw NO hippos, No water buffalo, No Rhino’s or Cheetahs. Was surprised not to see these here. Our trail drive break included excellent tasting ordure’s, wine, beer, non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice and bottled water. Cost for us was expensive due to additional tour bus, guide and cruise ship's cut. MY RATING: 8/10.

Vehicles used were typical African Safari land cruiser 4x4’s. It was a bit difficult to hear the driver explanation of things since we were seated in the last row of the vehicle.

TIP: If you are a photographer, try to quickly beat the crowd and get into the passenger open-aired seat for better viewing & photos (plus hearing the driver talk).

The animals here have no predators, thus less jumpy with no fear of being eaten. We were told that they used to let you drive your own vehicles in here but told they do not do that anymore.

Just done the day safari, reserve is amazing and staff very friendly. Some great sights and animals to see including lots of giraffes and zebra. Stopped half way round the reserve for some refreshments which was nice.

PRICE FOR GAME DRIVE IS VERY EXPENSIVE
Jun 2018 • Family
The game drive per person was R440, and when I enquired in Port Alfred it was R135 per person. So I suggest Mpongo Park to have competitive prices. And this is depriving the young kids and young adults that must still explore and learn about animals.

Family wild-life education in an easily accessible game park.
Feb 2018 • Family
This venue offers touch-farm facilities, a great restaurant that overlooks an active hippo pool, game drives and close-up encounters with a variety of wild and not-so-wild animals, including lions and monstrous tortoises.

Always a blessing
May 2018 • Friends
We spend a peaceful Mothers Day at Mpongo and like always, l think it is such a blessing, to be able, to do this!
Having lunch in this tranquil and peaceful setting, next to the water, is a special experience.
The food was well prepared and very tasty! Restaurant was not overcrowded. Good Coffee afterwards, outside, under the trees, was the perfect way to end a special day!
Thanx to Martin, Cosmos and Nandi for excellent hospitality and service. Really going the extra mile.....
Also, how awesome to have a lucky draw, with magnificent prices, afterwards!
BUT, the lions will forever and continue to be, my highlight!! They are AWESOME! Can't believe how they have grown, since Mothers Day, 2 years ago! Simba is no longer a cub!!
It is heartwarming that one can see how well they are taken care off.....in such good condition!
Thank you to all at Mpongo.....we are indeed so blessed, to have this magnificent place on our doorstep!

The best time EVER!
Jan 2018 • Couples
We had a one on one day trip with a ranger who took us around in his jeep 4x4.
The was the best, funny, welcoming, so knowable or the reserve and all the animals. We saw most of the 5 five except the rhino, they were hiding even with the rangers best efforts. We saw the lions which were amazing. We had never been on a safari before and we can see why so many people go back. So many amazing animals and a beautiful location.

We had a lovely breakfast, then set off. The ranger provided lunch while we were in the middle of the reserve surrounded by monkeys! We then went back to the main lodge and had the most stunning dinner as the set with Zebra, Giraffe, Hippos and so many other animals - what a way to end a total stunning, educating day?
Would go back any day.
