Let me start by saying that this should have been an enjoyable, safe thing to do during a pandemic. The opportunity to social distance and properly mask up is
I highly urge you not to come here if you are actively observing social distancing and properly wearing a face mask. This was a highly uncomfortable experience for me. The staff did not wear a face mask at any point. They get close to you at several points (mount, dismount, trail monitoring). One of the wranglers coughed several times into the open air. I asked her not to cough without a mask and she apologized initially. However, once we got close to dismount she began to berate me in front of the group and said that I wasn't even allowed to go on the ride because I'm from out of state (which is funny because I'm from Hobbs).
There was another wrangler who got very close to me without a mask and when I asked her to get further she said she was 6 feet and deflected by saying I was from out of state and breaking governor's orders (which I wasn't). She told me I could walk back if I wanted halfway up the trail and used this to taunt me. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this in pandemic times. Given the lack of professionalism, probably not during healthy times either.
When we were dismounting, one of the older gentlemen asked me if I had a good time, which I honestly replied no, because no one wore a mask. He stated that I was a "retard" and I left immediately after. I was anxiety ridden for most of the ride, it was completely gross.
The stables should let you know before you arrive that absolutely no face masks will be worn. Please do not assume you will be safe here. You are trapped on the ride for an hour and other riders are not required to mask up.
This is a complete and utter disregard for rider health. On our ride alone, there were travelers from all over.

Absolutely amazing experience! The staff have just such a kind disposition, the cowboys are really attentive and helpful, and the horses are of course amazing!
The route is really scenic and our large group ranging ages 6 and up all had an amazing time. Can’t wait to come back next time we are in town.

I took three of my teens with me, and it was such a pleasure. It was hot so bring a water bottle, and I suggest jeans, close toed she’s and a cap. However I usually like activities that are indoor, but this is totally worth it. The staff and the horse wranglers were excellent. It was so beautiful, and peaceful, and everyone left with a smile on their face. It was exactly what we needed to “hit the spot” with this vacation. I cannot express how wonderful it was, and how professional the staff was. I recommend Grindstone Stables without reservation. Finally it’s cheaper with cash, and it’s customary to tip the Wranglers. Just amazing!

We had so much fun! Everyone was so nice and friendly as they checked us in and evaluated our skill levels. The horses are beautiful and very well taken care of. The guides were great. They helped us get on and off our horses. They entertained us and helped everyone feel at ease. We rode Apache, Lilly and Gunnar. The views were spectacular. I would definitely go back.

We had a party of 10 that we booked two days before. They were ready for us and there was no waiting once we paid and signed the paperwork. We had a 6 and 8 year old and they got to ride their own horses. The weather was mild so that was great as it could have been a hot day. An hour was perfect. The guides were friendly and helpful if a horse was not cooperating. They are very efficient getting you on and off at the end. It was one of the favorite things we did during our week vacation.

Our family had an amazing ride this afternoon at Grindstone Stables. The horses were gentle, wranglers were friendly, and the views were spectacular. I highly recommend putting this on your Ruidoso to-do list. Shoutout to my sweet boy, Bourbon, for being such a good horse. <3

Our family of five visited Grindstone Stables and had a great time. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. They pair you with the perfect horse for your riding experience which was ideal for my grandchildren. The route up the mountain was so scenic and beautiful. The tour guides were funny, knowledgeable, and made this an amazing experience. I will definitely be coming back here next time I’m in NM.

We booked a horseback riding on the same morning for a party of 7. The lady on the phone was so nice and accommodation. We arrived on time and were greeted and tended to. The ride was beautiful, scenic, and comfortable. The guides were very friendly and informative. This was one of our favorite attractions! Almost went again the following day!

My boyfriend and I had been wanting to go horseback riding for a while but unfortunately everytime we were in Ruidoso the weather wouldn't allow it. Finally this time around we were able to book our horseback riding. Awesome scenery and awesome horses. Our guides (wranglers) were great, friendly and helpful. We got to ride Elsa and April, both very lovely horses. We both can't wait to go back! Make sure you reserve, they book pretty quick!

My family recently took a trip to New Mexico and spent a day in Ruidoso. One item on our list was to horseback ride, and using Yelp, we found Grindstone Stables. We arrived without a reservation to find they were fully booked for the day. Instead of turning us away, they asked us to wait a few minutes to see if the next reserved group showed up. Well, sure enough, they showed up, but the Cowboys said they had enough horses ready to go. So, we went on a great trail ride. My 6 year old had a blast on her own horse, and my 9 year old was in heaven... The trail boss and cowgirls were extremely nice and very talkative with our girls, making the ride thoroughly enjoyable. Super nice people, professional, and courteous.

Will they allow me to ride at 6 months pregnant? It’s not a lope or a trot so it wouldn’t harm the baby..

I have a 2 yr old daughter. Would she be able to ride with us?

My 3 years old got a pony ride instead while we were doing the horse trail. I understood that because of their insurance company they don’t allow double riding (as in having your kid on the same horse with you.) and children have to be 4 or 5 to ride on a horse alone.

The adult weight limit is 250 pounds. There was no information regarding weight for a child. We took our 8 year old daughter who is around 80 pounds and she got her own horse. We did see some smaller kids and some were able to ride with an adult. So if a child is riding with you I am sure they will take into account the weight of both.
