It’s always nice when something overdelivers. That was my experience at the Anderson. Way beyond expectation.

One block off of Main, down the leafy street towards the Zoo, sits an unassuming looking building so full of beautiful art it even hangs from the ceiling.

Such variety of modalities. Such excellent execution. A dream turned reality from an artist turned patron and philanthropist. Anderson’s vision lives on in the work of the many artists in residence from all over the world. They continue to make the museum the eye candy that it is.

I hope this legacy continues in Roswell for many more generations to come. What a great little gem.

My friend wanted to check out this place. I am not a big art lover but I came with him. First thing after we walked in a door, a nice lady came out and greeted us. She gave us a little background about the museum, how it supports artists through their live-in program. It was great to know that they helped aspiring artists to pursue their dreams and careers. The admission is free.

What I really find is great is there isn't just a single kind of art pieces to look at. There is a variety of pieces: paintings, photos, sculptures and installation art. As I stated before, I am not a big art lover but I still found a few pieces that kind of talked to me and I took a few nice pictures with them. I ended up spending around 45 minutes in here. I was surprised that I spent that much time in a museum. LOL.

This is a wonderful museum. I think it’s the best attraction in Roswell. Wonderful examples of modern realism. Don’t miss it!

There are a lot of very interesting exhibits here. More than you could expect from the modest look of the building. It is well worth visiting. Admission is free, but please "feed the cat" (the donation cat) when you are done. Well worth a visit.

Intro - I have noticed how little problem there was shifting our culture frame of reference for dating historical time from the more narrow BC or Before Christ to the broader BCE, Before Current Era. Not so when it comes to Art. I have never understood how Edwardian Era art critics managed to get a perpetual copyright to the term "modern" for their particular hundred year old artistic epoch. Until such times as the term modern in modern art is used in quotes with a slight eye roll, the term Contemporary as in the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art will do.

Why I think the Anderson Museum is showing 21st Century Master Pieces:
In the medieval guild system, a masterpiece was an example of work of such quality that it would prove ones qualifications to be an acknowledged Master of your craft.
The Anderson Museum exhibits the work of artists-in-residence who are given a house, a studio, a stipend and a year to do art. Once all the excuses have been removed, the artist is left with only their naked show us what you got craftsmanship and creativity. In my opinion, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art is filled with examples of the artist pouring everything they had to give into their work. The artists have prepared and presented their masterpieces and we are the judges. Entrance is by donation and I found myself digging a bit deeper than I typically do. The museum is deserving of your visit and the work deserving of your attention and respect.

As the other reviews indicate, this museum was started about 50 years ago by Mr. Anderson. All the art was created by individuals from all over the world who were given stipends to work in Roswell for a year. There are two large pieces created by Luis Jimenez depicting scenes from the the southwest that I found striking. I also came across another piece in a town in the vicinity.
This place is a real gem.

What a collection! An oil tycoon funds artist residencies every year and has an unreal collection of contemporary art. This is a must see if you’re in Roswell.

This is a very interesting collection of Art! Resident students are chosen to leave be & work in this program. Many rooms are filled with their creations. Some are small & some are enormous, from paintings to sculptures from various materials. We found it a great couple hours of fun seeking our favorites.

My grandsons and I thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon at the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art. I took a 3, 7, and 10 year old to the museum and there was something for each of us to enjoy. This is truly a don't miss gem! The museum is free.
